Topic: 4 month/ 4 hour routine Posted: 06 June 2009 at 10:09pm |
How do you know when your baby is ready to start on a 4 hourly feeding routine? My boy is very nearly 4 months old, but he was born a month early and so is lighter and skinnier than average for his chronological age. I don't want to start extending the time between feeds, or dropping a feed, until he's really ready. So what are the best, most obvious signs that I'll see when he is ready to do this?

I wouldn't have a clue, was kinda hoping that he'd fall into that but no.
Don't worry too much about being lighter than the average. My DD was lighter than the average & coped really well on the 4 hour thing. She had to cause she went into care rather than DS staying home with me so is still fully on demand

I'm breastfeeding him pretty much on demand, usually he wants a feed every 3 hours, sometimes a bit shorter or longer. I'd heard when they go through their 4-month growth spurt, its often a good time to move them onto a 4-hour routine. But should I just continue to feed on demand, and trust that he'll let me know if he can last longer between feeds?

I demand fed my daughter and I found she got her self into a routine when it came to feeding (I kept a diary of when i fed her and found she was feeding roughly the same time each day).
once he is on solids you will find (generally) speaking he will be able to go longer between feeds.

Whitewave, I have been wondering the same thing. I asked my plunket nurse at our last visit about when to move to 4 hourly feeds and she said to wait until they are consistently sleeping through the night (not a happening thing at my house). She also said that because breast milk is easily digested, some babies stay on a 3 hourly schedule until they start solids.

I feed my DD on demand.
I have found since 4 months she is feeding alot less often during the day and more at night. Because she wants to play during the day. And is distracted on breast.
DD is still having a good 2-3 hr nap in afternoon and normally 2 30min nap in morning.
I am feeding her every 30min-1hr in between these times. If we go out however she is happy to play while im out if im unable to feed. Its also more me trying to feed her this often so she actually feeds lol.
I much prefer demand feeding.
