Topic: The dreaded 45min napper Posted: 23 June 2009 at 10:51am |
Hi,
My 4 month old seems to have encountered the 45min nap intruder. It's a blimming pain but she seems to be happy awake (at the moment). For those that went through this how long did it last for you and did your baby learn how to sleep longer during the day?

This is a tough question.
In my ante natal group, we've all gone through spells of babies sleeping shorter, some get out of it again and some (like mine) don't.
I obsessed about it for ages and tried every trick possible to get him to sleep longer but nothing really worked. Randomly some weeks he'll suddenly sleep for 1.5 hours but the norm here is 3 naps of about 30 -40 mins each.
Sometimes he wakes crying, sometimes he wakes happy, I have just learnt to go with it.
If they are sleeping well at night I wouldn't worry, But I know how frustrating it can be!!!!

I found that if I slept with Charlotte she slept longer. I managed to get her into over an hour (sometimes even 2) if I slept with her at the same time. Even if I woke up part way through, I was able to get up and do stuff. But it did take a while and even now, if she has a nap (rarely) its still only 45 mins!!!

Jayden was a 45min napper and I obsessed with trying to get him to have another sleep cycle even was on the line to plunketline while letting him cry etc etc tried everything, in the end i gave up and he seemed to get into a routine where if he needed longer he did end up sleeping for longer . Even now sometimes he will only sleep for an hour

Mine was a 45 min napper at that age and now he sleeps 1 1/2- 2 hrs in the morning and 45 mins in the pm, we didn't do anything, I think it just your baby really and he'll do it if he needs to

I'm happy to get her up as she seems pretty happy after she wakes. It does catch up later in the afternoons when she has a mini meltdown. I'm going with the flow for now

welcome to the 45 min rush to get everything done you want to!
mine has been a 45 min sleeper and always seems happy waking up - but over the last week we have been getting longer mid day sleeps - up to 2 hours! - have also recently started solids and am wondering if there is a link or coincidence.
i say - go with the flow

ella went through a stage of doing that when she was younger. What I found helped, was after the 45 min when I heard her wake up, I turned on the white noise in her room and 75% of the time she went back to sleep for at least another hr (sometimes 2) . Eventually she learnt to go back to sleep on her own.

I have a 45 minute napper and sounds like we are the same as FionaO as I have tried everything to extend the naps and nothing has worked but occasionally we get a 1.5 to 2 hours sleep (every couple of weeks if I am lucky) so yeah I just rush around for 45 minutes trying to get everything done now and I don't stress about it anymore as it was doing my head in. She is always happy and sleeps well at night, so I don't complain.......as I have been told I am not allowed too LOL!

Arianne can sleep for about an hour, sometimes 1 1/2.
I believe the days of long sleeps are over, Arianne only have 3 naps a day now.

Same thing has been happening here!
Cam was getting quite overtired by the end of the day, so I was trying my best to extend his naps. I found I had to try and ignore his grizzling and only go in if he was really crying. Then sometimes he'd resettle himself and sleep for another cycle.
Last few days he's had massive morning sleeps of about 2 1/2 hours! So hoping he'll stay on track now!

DS has been a 45 min napper since about 3 months old. Never sleeps longer. Tried evrything, he even wakes up after 45 mins in the car.
So I've learned to live with it. To be honest, it's only inconvenient for me! He is a very happy little boy who only has 2x 45 min naps a day and sleeps 2x 6hour spells at night.
If your bub is happy, just go with it.

Seems there are a lot of 45min nappers out there! Mine started doing this about 8weeks for most naps but would do a 1 1/2hr nap randomly maybe once a week, arrrrggghhhh. I tried getting to resettle and most of the time it didn't work but also I got so sick of it that I prob didn't try after awhile. Things ARE getting better now though, we are now getting a 1 1/2hr sleep maybe each day or every other day which I just love
Most of the time she woke up wide awake after 45mins, often happy (sometimes not) so it was fighting a losing battle to get her back to sleep (imo). What's interesting now is that sometimes when she sleeps for longer I do hear her wake at 45mins and my heart sinks but then as she is sounding quietly happy I leave her and she goes back to sleep (just did it now, yipppeeee!).
I wish she would sleep longer each time but I can't see how I can force her to sleep so just have to go with it for now. It does make for long days though. What I've been doing that helps me is to make sure she gets a feed early before 7:30am so I can treat that as a night feed and it means she gets more day sleep than she otherwise would (and mummy can have a rest). This way my mornings go ok.
I've also been trying to keep her room as dark as poss during the day sleeps - not sure if this makes a difference but figure it must, I think a lot of the longer sleeps co-incide with when its cloudy and darker outside.....am going to try spotlight this weekend for blackout material.
Sorry for novel
