Topic: Salami Ok to eat?? Posted: 03 September 2009 at 6:42pm |
Hi guys,
I haven't had too many preggie symptoms other than feeling queezy / that car sick feeling the last week or so but this week I suddenly got HUNGRY!! I'm talking wanting to chew my arm off by 10am in the morning hungry and if I dont eat I'm to faint ...
I know you're sposed to stay away from deli foods and prepared meats but i was wondering if pre-packaged, vacuum packed salami from the supermarket is Ok?

Depends who you ask
I ate salami, prosciutto, generally all kinds of cured meats during pregnancy. Some people feel more comfortable changing their diet, so I would suggest you do your research and make your own mind up.

Yeah what she said...there are plenty of us who would eat pre-packaged, vacuumed packed so long as you eat it same day you open etc etc but then some wouldn't.
I agree, do your research, see what you feel comfortable with.
(for the record though, wouldn't be the worst thing I've downed this pregnancy or last! )

I have eaten it but as the other ladies have said vacummed seal pre-packaged and only ate it the day I opened it.
I asked my MW about it and she said that would be ok.

Thanks guys - I understand the risks and that some do and some don't. I've been avoiding all cured meats since finding out I was preggy but my sandwiches are SOOOO boring and today I caved in. It was soooo tasy but now I'm wondering if the guilt is worth the risk.
Keen to know who out there does!
I like you're attitudes - would eat it but only same day + pre-packaged and vacuum packed. Think this is what I'll go along with too

Agree with the vacuum package comments...although I never had it as didn't crave it that badly.
However I did have it cooked on pizza on a few occasions.

I have eaten the vacum packed ham and deli salami BUT only piping hot as advised....which of course just isnt the same.........Each to their own but if there was ever anything wrong with this baby I would go back over my whole pregnancy with a fine tooth comb and if there was anything i had done that was advised against then i would never forgive myself for potentially being the reason my baby having something wrong etc......i am hanging out on a few things but its a small part of my life to not eat it for a bit of peace of mind that im doing my absolute best to have a healthy baby

Up to you but it's worth noting that in Aussie about 10 years back they had a listeria problem in Don's Salami and it resulted in multiple MC's.
I Salami anyway but it's one of those things I wouldn't take the risk on personally.

I'd only eat it hot personally. But it comes down to what you are happy to risk and what not. I've just added a whole heap more fruit to my lunch to make up for the boring sandwiches!

Me. I eat ham and salami and sushi and so on and have done with both my pregnancies so its really what you feel comfy with. I don't feel guilty I'm too busy feeling nice and satisfied in my tummy
With Jake I was so sick that anything I could enjoy and keep down was acceptable to me and this time round I'm so starving hungry all of a sudden that I have to have yummy and quick food available otherwise I start throwing up and can't stop :sigh: pregnancy is a beeyatch!! Anyway thats my possibly controversial 2 cents worth

I ate salami never even thought of it as one of the meats to avoid i had it in my subway sub almost everyday but i had morning sickness from about 6 weeks to 25ish weeks so i ate pretty much whatever i felt like cos otherwise i wouldnt have eaten at all
personal choice and each to their own but i wouldnt call it possibly controversial babe i dont think anyone can judge if they arent in your body and experiencing it your way as all pregnancies are different

I thought I better add a caveat so I didn't get told off I don't think its controversial and I agree - nobody else is in my body but people who feel very strongly on the subject don't tend to see it that way. I've had complete strangers come up to me when I was preg with Jake and tell me off for eating vege sushi I still get stuff from the deli at the supermarket and I adore subway (not their prices though) and bakery rolls (ham and salad mmmmmmm) and basically the only thing thats changed for me is that I eat more lol otherwise I haven't adjusted my diet at all. I figure that I have enough going on with my body that making myslef miserable over food is stupid.

Definetly not controversial Babe! Controversial would be eating raw kina, paua & mussels (now that had a few people giving me 'tut-tut' looks! )

lol as we all know i am really funny about what i eat for the same reason as chickaboo said..having had two mc's even the miniscle risk isn't worth it for me(and i know someone who lost bub to listeria so that doesn't help) though having said that the most risky food i got offered was waiting to have him in hospital...lol so anyway deli meat for me and no sushi etc and I miss it..but for me it[s not worth the worry:)
and of course each to their own it's your body:)

And its what your willing to live with at the end of the day also.....i wouldnt feel guilt........guilt is eating a big bowl of choc icecream covered in choc sauce right after doing a 2 hour workout.........if i ate any of the NO GO stuff, i would be worried that i may have adversially damaged my baby and it could be something they have to live with for the rest of their life.......i know someone who wasnt so careful and their baby was born blind......i just would want to kill myself if my carelessness resulted in my child suffering for life.........morbid i know but its reality also
I have accidentally eaten some no go stuff but im not overly worried, i figure if you eat it all the time you are increasing your chances of getting a bad peice of meat or the egg with listeria etc........if you eat it very rarely then its a lot less chance. Im eating KFC for dinner tonight and i know some people that wont go anywhere near it, but i just zap it some more when i get it home
I also dont think i could handle the 'told you so' comments.....lol

Personally I wouldnt eat it, it is only 9 months. If its on pizza I do just pick it off. Im sure no harm would come but if anything happened you would wonder right??

I wouldn't feel guilty about it - it is up to you.
OMG what kind of person would say 'I told you so?' - they'd be scum of the earth
