     Topic: Sweep     Posted: 25 October 2006 at 6:15pm |

   Hi
My midwife talked about having a sweep at my next appointment. Can anyone else who has had one tell me what it involves? Is it sore? Does it take long? Did it work?
 Thanks

I reckon mine worked for me, and like gsmum said it wasn't so much sore as uncomfortable, doesn't take long either. The midwife will try and find your cervix (I say try because some women can't have them done) and then if it is 'favorable' they will try and get some of the membranes in and around the cervix to come loose (with a gloved finger).

Worked on the third go for me but I was in early labour so who knows. It is quite uncomfortable but I didn't mind cos it meant things might start happening.

Mine was uncomfortable but then my cervix was not co-operating - it was pretty prosterier. In the end the sweep wasn't really that successful for me.

Uncomfy and quick..She'll push her fingers right up there. My cervix was very prosterier and she couldn't reach it. She tried twice (on different days) but neither of them worked.

Yip uncomfortable (I giggled through the whole thing... as well as the physical uncomfiness, it is rather uncomfortable having someone with their fingers so far up 'there'!), but it did work for me... though could have just been the fact that I was already 2cm dilated. Went into labour within 35 hours. (At 10 days over due tho )

When's your next appointment, Katie?  I was prepared for 'uncomfortable' with my sweep, but I thought it hurt!  Dunno if I should say that though.  Everyone else has said it was uncomfortable, so I'd say that's what you'd most likely find too.  It is really quick though.  And I think it helped.  Ella was born 10 days overdue.   I'd had contractions all night (which stopped in the morning) before the day I had the sweep, then after the sweep (1cm dilated by then), the contractions started up again and got worse until she was born!  I'd do it again, that's for sure.

Thanks everyone. Doesn't sound like the greatest fun in the world but I guess you get a lot worse than that in labour!!!! My appointment is next Wednesday and the midwife will do one then. Quite a lot of you seemed to have success from it so if it helps get this baby out then it is worth it.
Hopefully my midwife will be 'speedy' about the whole thing.

I had one with Jayden and it didn't hurt or take long but it did work. Later that day i went into labour and had him. Good luck!

Not uncomfortable - more like awkward. I had three sweeps for this guy - none of them worked. It's common to get a small amount of mucus and bleeding after the sweep, however sometimes the plugs regenerates if it comes away and you're not ready to deliver.

I had one with the twins, the midwife said she was "really gentle" coz she didn't want to start labour, just wanted to see if my cervix was favorable for induction. I was 2cm dilated at that stage. It didn't hurt, but I did feel a lot of pressure down there afterwards. Had a show that night.

I didn't go into labour, I was induced 4 days later but when I was induced I was 4cm dilated so th em/w thinks it would only have been a matter of time before I went on my own.
