Topic: We’re home (long and with pics) Posted: 14 December 2006 at 9:07pm |
And as soon as the girls hit their cots they were fast asleep. They have both been realy good considering what a horrible place hospital is for them with all the noise and lights and constant disturbance.
Sienna came thru her surgery like a trooper. They did it telescopically thru her girly bits so no scar which is good, although while they were in there they discovered two blockages instead of the one they originally thought was there. They've been fixed tho and she has to have a follow up scan in 3 months to make sure they don't redevelop as apparently they sometimes grow back. She had another MCU scan where they run dye thru the kidneys and the reflux is still there, they don't expect that to improve for a couple of years so she has to stay on antibiotics till then. She will see the specialist every three months for the next 2 years or so and presumably have more follow up scans/MCU's to monitor progress. She also had a DTPA kidney function test this morning which we will get the results for tomorrow.
She recovered really well from the anasthetic, it's been hard as she has had a catheter, IV and pulse/ox machine attached so I haven't been able to pick her up, we even had to feed her propped on a pillow in the cot. Mercedes was really tolerant, she slept in the bassinette part of the Mountain Buggy even tho she is a bit big for it.
Unfortunately it looks like Mercedes has a similar problem to Sienna, they did a scan of her kidneys just to rule out any issues, and discovered she also has a blockage. But hers is only Grade I (Sienna's is Grade IV) so at this stage they have decided to leave her and rescan in 3 months to see whether it has improved/gotten worse etc.
So that's our long story. I'm stoked to be home after only 2 nights when we were originally told 5. Oh and did I mention that they didn't feed me even tho they are supposed to feed breastfeeding Mum's - seems no one told the kitchen about my dairy free diet despite me ringing the hospital twice before we went in and telling the nurse when we first arrived. They also didn't order the right formula for the girls either so just as well I managed to express enough milk to get us thru till it finally arrived the next morning.
Can't fault the nurses that looked after us tho, they were brilliant, helped me feed the girls and bath Mercedes (Sienna wasn't allowed to have a bath coz of the tubes)and looked after one or other baby while I took the other one for scans etc.
Sorry for the novel, hope at least some of you are still awake!

Before surgery...
Tubes and wires...
Strapped in the box for the MCU...
Medicine time...
My tolerant Mercedes...
Mercedes in her 'bed' talking to the dog...

I'm glad to hear the surgery went well and that both the girls are okay.. glad they are sleeping well for you They are both so cute! It's great that the nurses helped you out so probably evened things out with you not getting fed! Still rude though since you'd arranged it beforehand.

I'm so glad to hear every thing went well. You wouldn't even guess from looking at her that she had surgery. Gosh they have grown. Glad to hear Mercedes isn't as bad hope fully it clears up without help.

That's great that they could do the surgery laproscopically... dunno how anyone could ever keep a baby from upsetting their stitches! Glad you're already home where everyone will be heaps more comfortable. You're pulling through all this like a trooper, Emma! I can see where Sienna gets it from.

Oh Your poor things!!! What an ordeal!!! Glad its over for you!!!
Paige had Reflux kidneys and was on antibiotics til she was four and had the dye through her kidneys about 4 times. She never had to have any operations thank goodness as it all repaired. She nearly had to have the op when she was 3.
One thing I think is really important is to give them acidophillus while they are on these antibiotics as I didnt with Paige and she has had the most up and down immune system ...I went to a Doc who is a natural therpay Doc as well and always gives you an option and she said that when they are on those antibitotics every day their little immune systems take a real bashing.

I am never again going to say that things can't get worse. Because every time I say that they do. Last night I took Mercedes to the after hours doc with a fever and ended up going to Starship by ambulance because they put a urine bag on her and said she had a raging infection. We got to STarship and they did a sterile catheter sample and decided that in fact she just has some kind of virus, not a UTI which is a huge relief given their pre-existing renal issues. I was mega-annoyed at the afte hours doc tho for making s go to the hospital so unneccessarily (and by ambulance ) when all you can do for a virus is pamol and rest.
And to top it off the doc at the hospital (who was very good) decided he thinks I have PND because I was crying - I am soooo not depressed, just completely and utterly exhausted from everything that has happened! A good nights sleep and I'll be fine. But he sicked the social worker onto me and she rang this morning to see how we are getting on. I told her unless she is going to come and feed my babies at 3am so I can get a decent sleep then she's wasting her time...
Roll on Xmas when Mum and Dad will be here and I will have a few extra hands.
And please God just let me have a couple of weeks at least without one or other baby getting sick!
