Thankfully North Shore is roughly the same distance as Waitakere from where we'll be living. So no probs there. |

NSH isnt so bad Kymme, I had a really good stay in maternity. Was there for 11 shift changes and only had one bad nurse/mw and even though they were full and understaffed I never had any problems... Just a pain as its a bit further for you to go, maybe you will get my anaethitist.. he was SCRUMMY!

i dont live in that part of the country but that sucks..:( so they dont do c sections at all? cause if they do they should have the facilities for general.. quite frankly I've never heard of discrimination like that and of course you'd rather be where you are safe it's sounds so 1950's...!I'm 100kg too!

From memory, they don't normally do surgery at Waitak and only have a general medical ward, no ICU, 24 hour lab services or anything. I think it was only about 5 years ago that they got 24hour anaesthetics cover.
Waitak is massively under-resourced. They have the only ED for West Auckland, but can only open it 12 hours a day b/c of staffing and logistics. It basically used to be a small country hospital in a big urban area and is very very very very very slowly coming along with the times. The DHB itself has been way underfunded until about 3 years ago so I guess had to put it's resources somewhere.
No, I don't work there but have had a few dealings with them

hi melnel i had my 1ST daughter at waitakere 9 years ago and was transfered to NSH due baby needing more help with things that waitakere couldnt deal with, then i had 2nd daughter at waitakere 2 years ago both being csections.. plus was overweight with 2nd child as well..my experience with NSH wasnt great they were rude to me and made me feel like they couldnt be bothered with helpn me although id had csection .. i was 16 at the time so 9 years on i hope things have changed that is the only reason why i had been upset with going there but id rather be in safer hands then at risk of something happening and been at waitakere...i will be transfered back to waitakere the following day as my partner and 2 daughters will be coming up frequently so waitakere is closer:) my bmi is 41 waitakere dont take anyone over 35..although they were going to let me deliver there untill i saw the OB nilli who is fantastic and has delivered both my girls via csection said my last section was really difficult and took awhile to get baby out so she wants to be on the safe side..and she does csections at NSH and my MW will be there with me so im ok with it all now.. sorry ladys for going on but thought id share with yous had been so upset bout this today but am ok now :)

I'm pretty certain Waitakere does c-sections as I very nearly had an emergency one there. I got shaved and everything. C wasn't coming out fast enough. Luckily a very bulky OB was able to pull him out with a vontousse!

They do do CS (there's no way I'd deliver there without having that option if needed) but don't take those who are high risk and more likely to need other services.

They do C sections but they won't take you if you are overweight something to do with the anesthetic - I'm not too bothered - my MW can deliver at NSH and they're much the same distance from where I'll be living.
FX I'm not in labour during peak traffic.

One of the reasons that high risk is not allowed to birth at Waitakere is that the blood bank is not open 24hours according to a midwife I was talking to. Cos if my placenta doesn't move up I need to go to NSH for that reason.

I have to admit it does amaze me how under resources Waitakere DHB is, given the growth in the population, particulalry with maternity care as its a fairly young population too.
