i have been told not to take a general multivitamin as it has extras in it that arent good for the baby. thats why there are special mulitivitamins for pregnancy only. i take Thomsons pregna-care and also the folic acid. am also on Evening primrose oil as this really helps with later on in the pregnancy...now all i have to do is finally get pregnant!

I thought you weren't supposed to take EPO when pg? Or in the first trimester anyway

Those of you on elevit how do you find taking it i hear the pills are quite large, i'm no good at taking pills (swallowing them) half the reason why i was never on bcp is it really worth it or is it ok to just take folic acid.

Hi Sweetpea. I'm taking Elevit. They are pretty large tablets, I haven't had any problems taking them, but I am able to take most pills. Perhaps try taking them with yoghurt (I heard it is great to help lubricate your throat)

I recommend pregnavit (white container, with green on it) ....not too expensive that it breaks the bank account and can be taken whilst TTC, during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. I'd tell you what is in it, except I can't because I no longer have a container.

Elevit is the only pregnancy multi on the market that has 800 all the rest have between 250 and 400. The folic acid from the doctore is 800.

Elevit is good for when pregnant will switch to it then but in the mean time find taking my herbs, folic acid and fish oil and zinc works well for me.

i did but micogenics pregnancy multi but only has 250 of folic!! hopeless would have to take 2 a day to make 500 and don't know if you are suppose to.!!

unsure of what the wild yam is for? will ask naturolapath next visit.
It tastes foul but close my eyes and hope for the best!

Hi Sweetpea - I'm useless at taking pills as well, but I have been trying very hard this year and I can now take the elivit (with a mouthful of food that is) I'd recommend having some mashed potato with a bit of butter in it (makes things slip down easier), cut the pills into what ever size you need to start with and just take them with mouthfuls of food. The food acts like a buffer so you don't feel the pill at all.

Sweetpea, I'd have to agree with littlestar. I too am totally useless at taking pills and I was shocked to see how huge the Elevit tablets were!

Originally I tried crushing them and putting the crumbs on a cruskit with marmite to eat, but gave up on that idea when the pill starting jumping around the kitchen while trying to crush it. I ended up losing most of it before it made it's way onto my cruskit!

So, the best way was to break it in half, and when eating my dinner I take a mouthful of food, chew it and just before I swallow put half a tablet in the middle of my chewed food. I don't even taste or feel it go down - fanastic!

Hope that helps

I was nosey and did a Google (hope you don't mind ) and it's for PMS and cycle irregularity, also as an alternative to HRT! I think we're far too young to worry about that tho

My Folic Acid from the doctor is 5mg and the pills are really tiny - about the same size or a bit smaller than BCP. So if you're worried about pill size and you eat a fairly well balanced diet I'd say you can just take the folic acid. I also have a multivitamin that is in powder form so you just mix it with water or juice and drink it.

I have been taking Elevit for a few months but prior to becoming pregnant, I took a regular pregnancy vitamin from the health store, and then an additional folic acid supplement to top up since the vitamin only had 300 folic acid.
