Topic: when is it ok to start... Posted: 06 June 2006 at 1:40pm |
excersize and diet after baby is born. Assuming all gos normally and a c-section is not on the cards I was wondering when I can start to do some walking and stuff to start losing weight - I feel really self conscious about the weight I have put on now, and I have decided taht instead of worryign about it now that I will make myself an action plan of exersize and a good healthy diet for after bubs is born - that way I can relax a bit about how much I have put on now cos I feel like I have a plan to get rid of it. But I am not sure how long after a birth you can start that sort of stuff - are you still sore 2 weeks after the birth? When can you start walking? And runing? And going to the gym?

well i started walking a week after the boys were born with one of the other neonat mums. We did a couple of kms a day. Was really good about until I got depressed . I say if you feel fine then start of with nice gentle walks just remember to keep your water intake up.

If you are breast feeding then I suggest you dont diet! but you can go for walk and go to gym (if you have time) as soon as you feel up to it!!

I wouldnt diet either - just cut back the junk food and things like that. Not a strict diet of any sort (my opinion!!)
With walking - as soon as it stops hurting "down there" I would start going to walks, wouldnt do the gym for a few months as it takes your body a while to get back into the swing of things and to recover. Just think what your body is going through!! I was a size 8 - 10 pre pregnancy - went up to around a 14 - 16 (you can never tell with a big bump and I don't own scales!!) and I was back into size 8 jeans within a week - mind you after I stopped breastfeeding and being lazy it crept up on me.
Oh also I wouldnt do any running while b/feeding - to me the thought of milk and everything getting jumbled about doesnt apeal... also the pain iI was in just sitting down!!!
Sorry about the novel - in short take it slow, be consistent, and have a goal in mind (ie within 3 kgs of pre pregnancy weight in 6 months or something)
Also my apologies if this comes across the wrong way!!

Mmm yeah, if you are breastfeeding then running isn't ideal! hehehehe
I'm sure a healthy eating plan straight away would be great, but you have to remember that technically you are still "eating for two" as you have to make milk as well (which really takes the energy out of ya!!)
And the bleeding after birth sometimes lasts quite a while (mine lasted 6 weeks) and physical activity can start the bleeding up again.
It is a good idea to get walking when your babe is young. If nothing else it passes the time and often helps with a difficult sleeper

I went for a walk the next day after boys were born. more just to get out of the house than anything. And nothing vigarous. I think we went to Farmers or something like that. I recommend starting slow. I heard that it takes 9 months to put it on, so should take 9 months to take it off. I know weight watchershave a breastfeeding plan if you were really gung-ho about it,

Like everyone else has said don't overdo it!
If you are b/f you will probably find you lose lots pretty fast anyway and you shouldn't really diet until you finish b/f (LOL, that's why I am still huge and Joey is almost 10 months old, LOL) Walking as soon as it doesn't hurt and like Liz said, start slowly. I too went shopping the day Joey was born (supermarket) and took it slowly. Also you shouldn't lift anything "heavier than the baby
" for a wee while, so if going for walks with the pram try not to go up/down hills at the start....

I went to baby Factory on my way home with Zaara (4 days old), had to buy some things for her, since my hubbys family does not believe in buying things before bub is born.......any way I was a bit slow but not sore. I had a c section!

I went to the supermarket the day we got out of hospital, Xanda was 5 days, and I nearly fainted at the checkout because I was in so much pain, but I had a c-section, and I remeber trying to walk to the letterbox two weeks later and I felt like I was still waddling. But now Xanda and I go for a walk everyday, and we try to go where there are hills so I at least walk up one hill. But I wouldn't be too worried about starting exercise straight away, would just concentrate on healthy diet and easy walks. And then increase walk time and difficulty each week.

Honestly, I'd start walking now. Just around the block or something small - I was still walking to work at 8 months preg (about 1km away), albeit very slowly, but I think it helped with labour and recovery - still being fit. We used to go for walks around the block in the evening after dinner (yes, even in winter, around the well lit streets) - a great time for a talk too!
And you should be eating healthy now too - you're feeding your little one now - it's got to make you and baby feel better eating better.
You are so NOT fat, Newmum!
