Topic: Eating ham!!! Posted: 29 August 2007 at 3:51pm |
My in-laws are having a celebration on the weekend and have ordered a ham (on the bone). Do you think its ok to eat it??? Its not like it will be sitting in a deli tray at all???

Perhaps ask your midwife just to get the all clear?

Cold meats are generally a no-no. Can you get them to heat your portion in the microwave until piping hot - that kills the bacteria and makes it ok

Yep I would recommend that you just heat your bits up in the oven or in a frypan. A friend of mine did that at Christmas

My MIL gave me cold ham on the bone for five days straight when we were staying with them. I said that I wanted to heat mine up and she got really offended, but then again, she is a psycho.

I have been eating ham off the bone, as it is much better than the processed stuff, that is what I thought!

its totally a personal thing:) I am paranoid but also i follow the food safety book and it says only steaming hot..but as with everything it's each to their own!!:) it's just on the off chance that there may be a problem as we are 20x more likely to get listeria and other things apaprently!:)

hmm its tricky. I have sort of a fairly relaxed attitude to food in the first place. As long as its fresh I tend to find it ok. I don't eat seafood at all anyway, but thats the only think I would really avoid.
Thanks for your advise/opinions. Is it just the listeria that is the danger or is it actually something in the ham?

Like you, I was quite relaxed about food as well. As long as something was fresh, I ate it. I avoided seafood though. I have said it before and nobody agreed with me, the chance of getting listeria from anything is sooooooo minimal and even if something isn't fresh, it doesn't mean that it carries the listeria bug. Ham is totally fine and ok, most people avoid it, and that's fine, it's your personal choice. Listeria comes from dairy products anyway, not meat. However, you can't tell people these things because nobody believes you.

the reason pregnant people are advised to avoid these foods is that you are more susceptible to picking up anything as their immunity is lowered and listeria (for example) can damage the baby as well as the mum. safe food handling practices can be observed in your own home but i certainly wouldnt eat a ham sandwich from a cafe.

sounds like someone has tried to force their opinion on you neeandsam! hehehe
I know ham can be dodgy if its not stored properly during hot summer etc, but Im thinking ill be ok to have a we be this weekend with a fresh ham. Ill see how I feel on the day. The thought of hot ham kind of grosses me out!

Ew hot ham! Only if it's been cooked in a frying pan or something, I so would not want to eat microwaved ham! Kind of defeats the purpose of a nice piece of ham really. I've been avoiding those sorts of foods mostly, but I know we'll have ham at Xmas and I'll be having some for sure!

Eehhh??
Listeria, rare as it may be, can also be found in any food that left chilled / in a deli counter / that isn't reheated to above 70degrees.
It's still up to personal choice though
