Topic: Solids question Posted: 28 December 2007 at 7:59am |
I haven't talked about this with plunket, because my nurse who visited me last time is very "brief" with her visits which is a pain.
Daniel has been on solids since 4.5months. He really dislikes fruit but loves his veges and meat (so far beef and chicken).
He's eating all the blue tin veges and the red tin pureed stuff. But when do you start introducing little lumps etc, like mashed rather than pureed? I have absolutely no idea on this stuff! I'm not in a hurry or anything but I'm just curious since I know nothing about it.

I think it's usually around 8-9 months if I remember correctly. The jars/tins stipulate the age, & I think from 9 mths the food is more lumpy.

I think that you can begin that around 7-8 months from memory.
With the tins there I found a big dif between the pureed and the lumpy stuff - it is a big leap. I would test him first by giving him some home made pureed veges with just a few lumps in them and see how he goes. If he manages that then he may be ready to move up.
Good luck

Watties do some mashed food, which is in the 6-7 month tin, so I am guessing maybe around 7 months. I tried feeding Ella some homemade roast lamb and veges, which had a few lumps in it (not on purpose), and she had difficulty eating it so I stopped after 1 mouthful,

The side of the red tins say either pureed or mashed so have a look out for some mashed tins.

We do have some mashed stuff, but it did look very lumpy hence why I asked cause it was the 6-7month tins.. I have no intention on giving him mashed stuff just yet because I know he will just gag on it.

If you have some mashed tins you could still give them to him just mush the lumps up a bit so they a re fine lumps.

Yea I thought Watties jumped up too quickly as well. Just mash it with a fork and add a bit of warm water if you need to. I say get him onto food with a bit of texture as soon as he'll let you, cause then he's less likely (IMO) to get stuck on only super-pureed food at 9mos.

Yeah I was guna say the earlier the better really so you don't end up with a baby that will only eat pureed food. I used to mix the mashed tinned stuff with pureed stuff so it was about half and half and work up from there.

Yeah I don't want to end up with a child that only takes pureed food.. I'll try mashing up the watties stuff a bit more and see what he thinks in a few days.
He had banana custard for brekkie this morning. And he seemed to really like it, first lot of food that contains fruit that he actually liked so yay!

Whenever you think he is ready. Maya was on lumps from 5 1/2-6 months coz she started solids young, had teeth and was ready, the gremlins didn't start with the lumps till after they started finger foods around 8 months or so.

shouldnt be a problem as lumps can be chewed still with the gums.

The watties plunket guide says:
6-7 moths thick purees, small soft lumps or mash. So now would be fine.
8-9 mths is minced, chopped, grated and small finger food.

I started Kate on kind of lumpy food- soft lumps but I could never be bothered pureeing it all. She was 6 months when she started and has really lumpy food now (still soft lumps that she can mush up with her gums).
