QuoteReplyTopic: Those with an autistic child Posted: 04 November 2006 at 10:10pm
I was wondering if anyone has an autistic child and have another child as well. My son is 3.5 with borderline autism and my husband and I are looking at trying for another baby I just wanted to know what made you decide for another baby? Was he/she normal or do they have some traits of autism?
I have an 11 year old son with Aspergers (ASD) and two other kiddies. Although they are littlies, Andrew does not show the tendencies that Sean has. Connor is too little to know just yet. My hubby and I decided to have more kiddies without really taking into account seriously the possibility of another one within the autistic spectrum. We spoke about it briefly and decided that we knew what we would be getting ourselves into and really wanted a larger family.
A woman in my coffee group has a 6 year old autistic son and a 2 year old daughter. Her younger daughter shows no signs of autism.
You could get in touch with Autism NZ to find out more information or to be put in contact with other families to get more advice. Good luck.
When I was growing up there were 2 kids with autism and both were the oldest of 3 and none of the others had it and the younger ones used to look out for the older one too.
He had no speech
Very little eye contact
No social skills
Ignoring us when we called his name
Lying his toys up
Screaming
Head butting
And by the time he was 22 months old he was diagnosed with autism. At 3.5 he has improved tremendously and the only words he says his Bye Bye and Uh-Oh but he understands everything you say.
Peter and I went back to our OB/Gyn to discuss our options and is going to speak to our paediatrician on the risks etc.Peter and I scared of next one up ending up autistic but we also don't want to go through life WHAT IF and be miserable for the rest of our lives.
i have a 13 year old aspergers son, very high functioning and you wouldn't know he had it if you met him.
I have had another child but it was a different father so not the same curcumstances. But for the record she does not have any autisum.
I do belong to a support group and there are a few I know who have had more than one child and in their case they only had the one with autisum. (although one couple had 4 and 2 have got it)
Unfortunatly there is no sure way of making sure you don't have another one with autisum.
I have 3 first cousins with autism - one with aspergers, one with borderline aspergers/autism, and one with severe autism. As it is so predominant in my family I am terrified of Joshua also having it, so have done loads of research on signs, treatment etc. With my cousin who is borderline, he is the oldest of 3 - the other two are not autistic and really it was just the luck of the draw that they weren't. If you like, I can put you in touch with some support networks who can help. Just PM me if you need to.
I do know that on my husbands side of family his Mothers Mums brother his two kids are autistic and my half sisters son has just beeen diagnosed with ADHD at 8 or 9 years of age.
adhd is not on the spectrum of autisum it is just another trate they can get along with Autisum.
My son Josh did not get diagnosed till he was 6 so for you to find out so soon is a good thing.
