JoannaNZ's post about feeding on one side or both at each feed got me thinking. How do you know that baby has drained the breast during a feed? I have been feeding baby on one side at each feed & I just let him feed until he comes off & seems to have had enough. But maybe he comes off because there's no milk left rather than him being full?? How do you know?

Offer him the other side, if he's hungry he'll take it if not he's had enough. Plus at 3 weeks Spencer would scream even if he only needed one more mouthful so I'm sure you would hear about it if he was still hungry.

Tom goes through phases of needing both boobs and sometimes just one. I normally just give him one unless he seems a bit restless after and then I offer the 2nd.

Yep this worked for Josh. Some times he would only take one side but sometimes he would take both sides.
If he only has a little bit of te other side make sure you start the next feed with that side.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I try a quick hand express as baby comes off, if nothing comes after a couple of 'squeezes' then she has drained it (only ever happened twice for me when i went back to BF after a break of a couple of days, normally Carys could never drain one of my boobs!)

I know Caprece has had enough because her sucks get further and further apart or she pulls off and doesn't go back on. I know she has drained one side because shes sucking heaps but she only swallows every 5 or 6 sucks and thats when I will change sides.

I can usually judge by sucking too, Lily wwill only drain my breast as the day goes on as I have a slight over supply.

I split feed so have a break between sides, if she is really hunngey then she will do sa bi feed on the second side, if not then she won't really latch on for more than a minute or so.

Your milk will start to settle about now (if not already) so you will probably feel 'empty' on one side and 'full' on the other after feeds.
