Topic: very disappointed in Plunket Posted: 07 February 2008 at 3:17pm |
We have just got back from a visit to the Plunket Family centre for a "settling" talk. Jack is fed to sleep and I was looking for ideas on how to change this. There was another Mum there with an 8wk old (Jack's 9mths). We were shown 2 videos, 1 relevant to the other Mum and 1 for me. Was told that Jack should be having 2 hr naps (he usually naps for 45min but this morning before going out had 1 1/2hrs ).The video showed CC or CIO.
I was very disappointed in the "one size fits all" approach, wasn't given any ideas or support on how to make the change and there was hardly any discussion. It was a complete waste of 2hrs (1hr "talk" + driving time) and it has mucked up Jack's naps as he had 10mins in the car and woke when I got him out and couldn't put him back to sleep.
So I am no further ahead especially as I personally don't like CC or CIO. So I am not happy (although feel a bit better after this rank!) and needless to day I did not leave a donation!

Eh - plunket can be handy (for weighing bubs! Lol) but otherwise I'd say you're the best judge of your own baby. Seb never had 2 hr naps at that age.. was on 2 naps of 1 -1/2 hours a day.

Aww that sucks, I have always found plunket great for check ups but not so great for settling ideas. I'm in the same boat as you, have an absoloutey terrible sleeper and am trying to figure out a way to help her sleep a bit better without CIO.
A really great book (that I lent to a friend and never got back ) is the no cry sleep sloution, its brilliant and doesn't involve one cry.

Have a chat with Lousie from the sleep store and see if she can give you some different advice. She has lots of ideas and books/dvds for other methods of settling.

Hi Lindsey
Michaela was fed/rocked to sleep until about 9 months too. We had real issues because this also meant that at 9 months old I'd only had 2 full nights sleep since she was born
I contacted the sleep store and their suggestions coupled with those in 'save our sleep' which I borrowed from the library were invaluable. Check out the section on sleeping on the oh baby website and it will direct you to the sleep store.
Good luck. The first few nights may be hard but if you perservere you'll find in no time your little one's fine at self settling without props. I am still amazed, every now and then, at how easy Michaela goes down.

Ah that sucks, I went to the family centre in Christchurch and they didn't for one second suggest that I let him CIO or do CC, is such a shame that your centre wasn't better. I hate the inconsistencies with plunket, seems that the care is dependant on what area you live in and which nurse you get

I agree with Cuppatea it depends on which centre you visit. It's awful that they didn't help you and give you ideas.
I agree with contacting the sleep store louise is awesome My son had got into the habit at 5.5 months of waking 4 -6 times a night to be fed back to sleep i tried lots of things you name it I tried it.!!! but by 8.5 months that was it..... I was ready to stop Breastfedding forever... But luckly The sleep store helped and I brought the sleep easy solution D.V.D it does involved some crying but for us it worked.
Luke now sleeps from 7pm till about 4 or 5am we are working on sleeping longer.....
the no crys sleep solution book is good if you've got lots of time to do it in. We were limited because I was returning to work.
sorry gone on a bit. hope it helped?? Godd luck

What a shame that you had bad experience with the family centre., I think Meadowbank is better family centre. I keep saying we need the old Karitane hospitals back to help you young mums

Thanks for your thoughts and comments everyone. I have read the No Cry Sleep Solution but I did think that it seems too hard and time consuming. I have bought Sleeping Like a Baby and like it but haven't been too successful.
I suppose that I just need to make a definate decision on what we are going to do and stick to it. Will contact the Sleep Store and make a time for us all to go in.

The Sleep Store are great, something as simple as a sleep sack and closing the curtains got the gremlins to go from 45 min power naps to 2 hour day sleeps when they were smaller.
I've had only good experiences with Family Centre, but I do agree it depends on which ones you go to, and my experiences there have all been with newborns not with an older baby.
You could always PM our Kels for advice too, she rocks!

Hey Linzy,
I think I know the which centre you are talking about as I had the same experience. I have real issues with the whole concept of 'self settling'. I am not sure I always agree with the sleep store methods either, but I think the main thing is that you find a method that works for you and your baby as all babies and mamas are different.
If you are not into CC or CIO then I would recommend Williams Sears book - The Baby Sleep Book. The quote that really struck me was if you were your baby how would you like to fall asleep. Once I read that I felt ok about rocking and feeding to sleep. I really believe that babies need us and night too! This book does not give you a method for helping your baby sleep through the night, but it gives great tips on settling babies and explains the physiological reasons why babies sleep differently to adults - that was really helpful.
All the best and Good luck.

I know how you fel. I don't really like our family centre here is Palmy because of one of the older nurses there. My plunket nurse is younger (well in her 30's) and I love her she is great.

I went thru the same thing with Cooper. I read Becoming Babywise and that really helped me. Now I can put Cooper to bed awake and/or up to 45mins after he's had something to eat.
I'm not an advocate of CC or CIO, I kind of muddled thru myself, and we kind of came to a compromise that I was the boss and not him.

Gina is younger and only sleeps once a day for about an hour - hour and a half. And daycare don't find it odd, in fact they say it's a great thing so I don't see the issue there.
As for Plunket and the whole CC and CIO thing - GRRRR

Yeah definitely not a fan of CIO or CC either! I'm SICK of Plunket Nurse, Family Centre & Plunketline all telling me theres no other solution and that this is the only way to teach him to self settle. Tried it a couple times at diff ages (most recent being ten months) and I find it VERY cruel and emotionally traumatizing for a wee bub to be left screaming his lungs out!
We also have the same problem here, Lucas is still breastfed to sleep and is waking several times of a night and very wrestless sleeper. Never slept through (maybe once or twice when he's had a big day) ...but generally 2-4 feeds per night still. I've had enough, but i don't know where to start also. Will take a look at that sleep store everyone recommends!
How are Jacks solids going Linzy?

CIO = Cry it out. Leave them in room to cry it out, no giving in and going and checking on them. Totally cruel
