Topic: Breastfeeding HELP!     Posted: 27 March 2008 at 9:12pm |

This has probably been asked a zillion times...

But I'm at my absolute wits end.
 I've never had a problem BF'ing Hannah. She's been a dream.
But in the last week she's started to get REALLY fussy!
And it's getting worse and worse each day.
Her middle of the night feed, 1st and 2nd feeds of the day are great. The 3rd and 4th are dicey and her night time feed is impossible!
She latches on for 3 seconds, screams, latches on, screams, latches on, screams etc...
So I try her on the other side. Same thing!
 It's driving me nuts.
Unless I express milk and feed her, it takes a good 90 mins and screaming. She ends up REALLY windy and unsettled and sleeps in 2 hour lots at night.
I've had DH sick with a stomach flu for the last 4 days so I've had about 12 hours of broken sleep since Monday morning.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Otherwise I"m going to the supermarket to buy formula

   Hi charly

Im having a similar thing, but not as bad as it sounds like for you. sometimes I think my boobs are empty and he is crying cos he's not getting anything      Now I think perhaps its a build up of wind from during the day (if thats possible) and him getting over tired.
Have you tried some sort of winding stuff like grip water or whatever works for you? maybe if she has got overtired she won't feed?
Have you tried the plunket line to see what they say?
 Good luck

I find that Lauren does this when she is trying to get my let down to happen which is particularly slow in the afternoon/evenings. As soon as the let down happens she's happy as.

Do you think it could have something to do with that, just a thought??

I would try the plunket line too, they are very helpful and full of really good ideas you can try.

Good luck, as a last resort you could offer forumla, one feed wouldn't hurt your supply just so you can get her fed and into bed so you can get some much needed sleep.

If it is a let down problem, tyr expressing a bit first until your letdown starts and then put her on.

I have heard marmite on the nipples can sometimes work

Try and relax (yeah right) and feed her in a quiet dim room so there is no stimulation for her.

Maybe your AF is coming back and your milk is tasting funny (or eeeeekkk you couldnt be PG could you?)

hahaha I'd need to have sex for that to happen
I got AF about a month ago, so perhaps I'm due again?
I expressed, and it took a good 15-20 pumps to get milk out. Perhaps it is a let-down issue. I'll give that a try tomorrow
Thanks ladies!
 You're all awesome

Can you feel your let down happen?

I can feel mine really well (its actually a wee bit painful) and I know that is Laurens problem when she pulls on and off. To help my let down happen faster I sit back in the chair and think about relaxing and just let my whole body collapse into the chair so to speak and I think loving thoughts about her and watch her suckle to stimulate my milk production, my let down usually happens pretty quickly once I do this.

Yeah, I can definitely feel my let down. Perhaps I'm not giving it enough chance.

Thank you all for your help. SO so much!
I don't know how single Mums cope! They deserve a gold medal!!
Or how people coped before OhBaby!
She ate 40mls and fell asleep. She's had about as much sleep as me (and lots of little feeds throughout the day) so hopefully she stays down for a few hours.
If she wasn't so sweet, and for you guys, I'd be tearing my hair out right now

Charly I know it can be frustrating waiting for your let down to happen, but that actually makes it worse as you tense up. Just really try to relax and it will happen more easily. Easier said than done, I know how you feel!!!!!!!

as you know same thing happened to me and i ended up switching to formula.. i hope it gets sorted for you as i know how much you want to feed..i think in my case it was a lot about how i wasnt relaxed due to circumstances and he was getting frustrated with lack of milk after wanting so much !

Sorry to thread jack a bit but should everyone feel the letdown? I don't think I do but I don't know what I'm looking for.

I didn't feel it either in the first two months or so, but now it is so strong it is actually a wee bit stingy. If I am out without Lauren and she is due to be fed I can feel my let down so much that on ocassion my boobs have just started pumping out the milk highly embarrasing when you don't have breast pads!

Freesia, i didnt feel it to start with and then did for a few months and then didnt again. I dont feel it now.

From what I can rememeber it felt like a tightening in your boob. Like it was getting squeezed or perhaps like the milk pushing through narrow tubes (Duh!).

Charly, I agree with the others it definitely sounds like she is getting frustrated waiting for the milk to let down - a hot water often works far better than a pump for let down - well for me anyway.

My let down is much slower in the afternoon, so I like to have a bath with him - that gets my milk going, I feed him in there and then feed him the other side when we get out. The second side comes much easier after the first.

You are doing a great job - formula feeding is not at all easier than BF, its just a different set of problems.

My letdown feels like pins and needles tingles in my boob. I only get it in one tho even if the other boob is getting fed from.

I sometimes have issues with let down at night so I sit there will baby on my boob, eyes shut and imagine the milk flowing through. Its sounds really silly but it works everytime. You have to breathe and try and relax as much as you can.

If my letdown is slow I take a quick break and drink a huge glass of water or something, and relax a bit then let her try back on. Usually end up getting a letdown relatively quickly after that unless I'm super stressed!

And I can definitely feel my letdown, it hurts like hell! Sometimes when I feel it let down and she isn't sucking, I involuntarily grab my boobs because it hurts. I've done that a few times in the supermarket, I hope no one has seen me

Me too Janey, I get that let down feeling all the time, especially if I am feeling quite full.

I can actually bring on a let down just thinking about Lauren when I fully relax, and its exactly like pins and needles in your nipples!
