Topic: I cannot believe... Posted: 08 June 2008 at 5:33pm |
The argument I just had with Willie!
I get out of the bath and Miss Fifteen announces she is going out for a smoke. I said "umm, hold on, I don't think so! If you're living in my house, you're not smoking!"
Then I went off to get dressed and I hear Willie telling her to go for a walk and I won't know.
Excuse me! Since when are we allowing 15 year olds to smoke?! I like to think I'm pretty liberal when it comes to parenting, and I must confess that I was smoking long before 15 so I have no illusions that if I stop her doing it at home she won't go and do it somewhere else, but I was certainly never "allowed" to smoke at home when I was 15!
So Willie and I ended up having a screaming row. I told him if I catch her smoking she can find somewhere else to live. He told her she doesn't have to help out around the house anymore if I am going to be like that. I told him if that's his attitude HE can go too.
I do NOT want smoking around my kids, especially not around Maya coz the next thing I know it'll be her smoking, she is far too impressionable.
So now she's gone up the road "for a walk". I have no idea what I'll do when she gets back, but at the moment I am so very tempted to kick the pair of them out.

I can't believe Willie would allow his 15 yo daughter to smoke - that's CRAZY!
I would have been kicked out of home if I even thought of bringing a packet home at that age.
Good on you for sticking to your guns Emma, you definitely don't want smoking around your children. 2nd hand smoke can do a lot of irreversible damage, sometimes more so than being the smoker yourself.
Gee kids these days ...they start off rebelling so young!!!

Family Meeting! It's against the law for her to even buy cigarettes, so is he supplying them too? If that's the case, give them the hard word!

Good for you Emma!!! Why would Willie want his girl smoking?????
I know she will go off somewhere else, I did but there is no way my parents would have let me smoke at home.
I cant believe he told her she didnt have to help out around the house because you told her she cant smoke in your home!!!!!!
I am hopping mad for you hun! I would have told my DH where he could go...

He's hiding in the spare room coz after she left I went in and told him that I am not going to scream in front of the kids but that is my bottom line, non-negotiable and that if she thinks she is going to disrespect me in front of my kids then she's got another thing coming. End of story.

Even now at 26 I still don't smoke around my parents .
He does need one hell of a kick up the arse to sort that one out.

Stick to your guns Emma! There is no way a 15 year smoking is cool, especially around the girls and an impressionable 5 year old!

Errrrm...how is she getting the smokes??!!?? Even I get ID'd at 24 nowadays!!! Seriously, that's not good. Mum and Dad knew I smoked but I never smoked at home until it was legal for me to buy them....and even then it felt seriously strange (I wasn't living at home)...and I didn't before then because I wasn't allowed. That's seriously disrespectful, and Willie really shouldn't be taking the course he is re. the chores etc either because that's basically undermining your authority.

Hmmmm tough one. I know shes not your daughter, but even if you dont let her smoke there shes still going to smoke anyway.
My mum let me smoke at 15 because i was going to do it behind her back if she said no anyway. She would rather me do it at home than walk the streets to do it without her knowing..
Not saying that you have to let her, i think you should stand your ground, my mum was FAR to soft on us kids..

Man I cannot begin to imagine the stress of living in your situation right now while trying to "take it easy" before the baby arrives..
And yeah, encouraging smoking is so not cool..

WTF?? How can he argue that it is ok for him to be supplying cigarettes for her?
I would be just as mad Emma, good on you for sticking to your guns. There is no way that would be happening in my house, around my kids either. (And I'm an ex-teen-smoker too, lol, how things change eh?)

Yup, I totally get that, but I am certainly not going to encourage it coz then what right will I have to tell Maya not to smoke, and at what age?

I'm with you Emma - and as far as I'm concerned, Willie is helping his daughter to ruin her health (and her looks - smoking is way bad for your skin and teeth - esp if you start that young)!!
