Topic: Greer Update Posted: 25 May 2009 at 8:42pm |
The other thread was getting a bit long...
Got MRI preliminary results today - there was nothing major left, just a layer that is right next to the spinal cord, which is what they were expecting. They think they got 90 something percent of it. Now we need to talk to the oncologist and decide when to start chemo, which will happen here at Starship, not Wellington. If we get a wee break before chemo, we might get home for a bit which would be great.
She is doing really well from a surgical point of view, other than a few feeding issues (vomiting up her nasogastric feeds and no interest in taking bottle). Main thing now is lots of physio cos she is very floppy and needs to relearn how to hold her up, sit, possibly walk etc...
But all in all, going pretty well at the moment

Aimee, fantastic that they got most of it and that the surgery went as well as it could. I really hope you can have some great time together as a family before the chemo starts. Fingers crossed for an events-free trip home.

Have been following your journey and couldn't read and run. Just wanted to let you know about a National Travel Assistance Fund through the Ministry of Health where you can get help with travel and accommodation costs. Would be worth checking out if you don't already know about it. We recently used it but no-one told us about it.
All the best for Greer's recovery. You sound like a very strong mum - it can't be easy watching your baby go through these procedures.

Thanks everyone
Just wanted to mention how fantastic the National Travel Assistance Scheme is.... Daniel has gone home today to work so we actually have some money! But he gets a return flight per week paid for by this scheme, and all he has to do is ring up the co-ordinator and she books the flight he wants. Its great cos it means he can go back home and work 4 or 5 days, and then fly up here for the weekend. I would get very lonely otherwise The social workers have been great about getting it sorted for us.
And I have managed to find a positive in having to do chemo - we will get to stay on the brand new oncology ward that opened here less than 2 weeks ago. Apparently its very flash!
