There was a nurse and she went to a home visit when there was a family from Africa. They got onto the subject of circumcision and where she could get her 7wk old baby done. After discussing that it is not often done anymore other than cultural reasons therefore is done privately by only handful of surgeons. The mother asked if she would have to pay. The nurse advised it was around a few hundred dollars. Mum asked why since it made babies cleaner etc... Nurse discussed the medical info to refute this and advised that the procedure is now seen more as cosmetic surgery rather than for medical reasons when there is nothing wrong. Mother is mortified that it isnt free and decides that since they do it back home at home themselves she can do it The nurse is horrified and tries to explain the risks and how it is illegal in NZ. Mums friend is there saying great idea (course she would her baby is a girl). Nurse tried to do her best to get it thru the mums head it is illegal and ends up saying that cyps will take all her child off her if she tries this. Mum laughs. Nurse has tears welling up in her eyes and is fighting back the tears as she has to leave the little 7 wk baby hoping and praying for his sake that nothing happens by tomorrow. Nurse cries her way back to the clinic and rings everyone she can think of for help. Nurse has meeting with african support worker tomorrow to go and visit with family........

Gosh some days can be hard

I hope that with the help of the support worker that they can "get through" to this mother.

Gosh this has really upset me, I cant imagine ever wanting to do anything like that to my little angel.

OMG I will be having a drink for the nurse that poor little boy.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Wow - soo soo sad. The worst part of that, is that it DOES happen in Africa! Baby's are still having this done without medical help!!!! It soo breaks my heart, I have to shut it out or I'll go stir-crazy!
