Hi here I go yet again.....I am having such a bad time with Brooke again!!!! Has been going on for bout three days now.....shes worse than she ever was and Im really not dealing with it well.I try my best with her but am at a loss to what her problem is......She has been checked by doc and yet again Im told theres nothing wrong with her....She is always happy and smiling when I take her.She wont sleep hardly at all during the day.sometimes 30 mins and other times 10mins.and thats after spending sometimes an hr or so trying to give her dummy in bed and rocking her.....I am only feeding her 3hrly yet it seems like alot of the time she has tummy upset......and by the time evening comes she is so overtired that we have huge screaming sessions......leaving her to cry it out in bed just doesnt seem to work...she just gets hysterical.Im having fights with hubby bout that one.he thinks leave her to scream no matter how long but I feel it not the way.My little boy is missing out on my attention and when he does finally get it I just yell at himHe doesnt even want to be home with me anymore.I feel like since Brooke been here theres been nothing but stress in our household...lastnight I put her in carseat and drove up to my mum inlaws and told her that I dont want her anymore and burst into tears....she came hm with me and helped and it took till 10.30 to finally get her to sleep.soooo here I get to my point.....do you think I should give up breastfeeding????would she be more settled on formula?????I am being soo careful what I eat but she always so unhappy..perhaps the quality of my milk is not great cause Im so tired and stressed.Id really like to find a miracle............sorry this so long but Im honestly so desperate now

Once again I really am sorry i can't give you any advice to help make it better.

Poor you guys. I really think before you do anything as drastic as giving up breastfeeding you should speak to a peadiatrician. i dont know if you are currently under a pead or if you are just going to a GP. Ask around. If you go to the www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz website im pretty sure there are some paeds listed there.

In my experience cutting down breastfeeding and starting formula didnt help at all and possibly made things worse. Because Jayde ended up having to go on a special formula that you can only get on perscription.

I know going to a paed is expensive but i think your sanity and the health of your child is worth the cost. You could also ask your gp for a refferal to go to a public paed but you may have to wait some time for an appt. I went to one publicly as none worked privately here and i just phoned every day and got people i know in the hospital to phone for me as well and instead of a one month wait i got in in 2 or 3 days.

The health system is there for you, but unfortunately you have to push and push. Another thing you could do is to just go to the emergency dept at the hospital and ask to see a paed.

I'm sooo sorry you're having such a difficult time again :(
I wanted to say that it's great you have breastfed for this long. It must be really difficult trying to juggle both kids at once, so I hope some of the mothers here have advice on what to do with the older child when you are breastfeeding.

I am going to put a post up on the main forum I go to and post what you've written here, as there are many breastfeeding/veteran breastfeeding mothers who have excellent advice, I've known them for ages and they are all great people.

I'll send you the replies :)

Just wanted to add that putting her on formula won't help if she has a tummy upset, but maybe there is someone you are eating that she's allergic to.. dairy? or something else.. you need to see a different doctor as you're her mother and you know something is wrong..

Have you called Plunketline? Asked to see the plunket nurse again? Tried La Leche League (they are in the phone book).. all will have lots of suggestions to try as they've seen so many babies before.. also you could try the Familiy centre, they are great for advice too.

Oh dear Roxy, sounds like you are having a really bad time of it! All I could suggest is trying to find someone to come & give you a hand with Brooke so you can get some sleep. Everything is a lot better with some sleep, and babies pick up on stress so easily that this could be the problem (or one of them). If you think putting Brooke on formula may help that is up to you, but it's just very hard to get back into bfing (if you wanted to) if that turns out to be not the problem.
Usually when you are stressed or tired its not the quality of milk but the actual supply can decrease, which can make bubs upset. Maybe sit down with your hubby & make a list of what you could think the problem is, as her Mum you are probably the best one to figure out what might be wrong and if it is something a doctor might be able to fix (such a silent reflux, colic etc) then you will just have to be very pushy to get a helping hand. Hope things can settle down for you soon. It is soooooo hard when you are tired, and your hubby needs to help out abit more too by the sound of it.

This is a summary of all the posts I recieved, these mums have great advice.

- baby could be having a growth spurt - these last for up to a week - and in this case you will need to feed more often.

- try feeding on demand, not every 3 hourly, your baby is still little and might need to eat say, every 2 hours.

- try getting rid of the dummy and feeding when she cries instead, even if you did feed her 5 mins ago.

- colic, try gripe water.

- your stress is being passed to baby, they pick up on things really easily..

- try these websites for great advice - I really would recommend them..

www.kellymom.com and www.askdrsears.com

There is information on how to juggle breastfeeding a baby with an older child too.
