Topic: No Scan? Posted: 25 July 2008 at 4:28pm |
I went for my 12 week app with the MW the other day and was expecting to have a scan booked.
She told me They're not usually done unless you're over 34 years old and she only gives them if you really insist or if there is a medical reason. She saw no reason for me to have a 12 week scan and then said I should wait till the 20 week mark.
WTF? I thought I got one at 12 weeks for downs?

Only if you are at risk of it, and your MW thinks you are.

I never had one, I was such low risk that it wasn't needed

My midwife said I didn't need one but that if I wanted one she'd send off for an appointment (it's not funded in our area, so if you want one you have to pay).
If you do want one then she should get you one - most people want one as they really want to see baby by then! lol

They're stingy with the scans here in Palmy, most of us have the 20-wk one and others are only for complications (or the risk of).

Yeah it depends on the area - in Chch you get the 12 and 20 week ones, plus a dating scan if you ask for one.

Not always I wasn't suppose to get a 12 week one but managed to convince her I needed it for dating. Depends on the midwife really.

I was 27 when preg with Caitlin and I was offered the 12 week scan. I don't class myself high risk either.

Danaj, I am surprised but then I am old compared to you so I guess it was taken for granted I would have a 12 week scan! Guess it may depend on what part of the country you live in? Two workmates of mine (both just under 30) had scans. I am with the others, if you want one, be insistent, and 20 weeks is a long time to wait!

i got one done at 9 weeks because I was unsure of dates. If you really insist that you want one or say you're unsure of dates they should let you but depending on where you live you may have to fork out around 40 bucks.

I asked my MW and she saidthey didnt do them until 18-20 weeks, was gutted too because i really wanted to see baby. I didnt know you could pay for them though, will phone on monday and see if i can do that (im too impatient to wait). I know of lots of people who have had them at 12-13 weeks too

My midwife insisted I have a nuchal scan done, even though I am 23!!! She just said that she refers all of her patients for one, including a dating scan a month before the nuchal scan.
I suppose it differs from DHB to DHB....

im 20 and my doctor also insisted i go for a scan at 12 weeks.
it was at the 12 week mark that a friend of mine received terrible news, that her baby had an abnormality with its skull development and if she went through to full term, it was likely her baby would die in the first few days of life.
if they can detect that at such an early stage, then it seems extremely important to have that first scan, just to be sure.
but you must book it in to have it done before 13 weeks and 2 days i think, or 13 weeks and 3 days, otherwise they won't do it

I am 25 and I had the nucal scan. My midwife felt its better to test even though I may be low risk because of my age.

It also depends on which DHB you come under, some only fund the NT scan for at-risk women (over 35, family history etc.). I've had an NT scan with all three pregnancies.
