Toyota Corolla's are very reliable cars, especially for your first! As are the old ford lasers ...
I'm pretty sure AA magazine named the corolla as the best first car once ...
I had a '92 for laser for my first car, it had already clocked up 230,000kms when my grandparents got it for me. I only upgraded when I was preggers with my boy because I wanted a newish car that was going to be more reliable and not run the risk of packing up on me. I bought a 2002 Holden Astra and as much as I love my baby (the car!) ...it's been such a PITA because of the hatch aspect, wouldn't fit my first two (bulky) prams in the boot and when I bought his highchair etc I had to get them delivered because again it wouldn't fit.
Just take into consideration that you have to have a carseat in there, and if you need to pick any kind of bulky item up from somewhere it may not fit...
Good luck :)

I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla stationwagon, I know they are a reliable and cheap to run vehicle! They are also cheap as chips to insure.
I don't think you can go wrong with a Toyota!

I have a 2005 corolla wagon and I haven't had any probs. Not sure about the earlier models but mine is great on gas and has good space. Just do some research on the asking price as it's 18 years old and the car market is dropping.

I really suggest you go for a toyota over anything, they are the most reliable car ever, also the cheapest to fix.
Everything is so easy to get to in the engine bay and there is so much room in there, you can practically climb inthere with it, not that you will be fixing it yourself, but for mechanics if anything did go wrong, they dont have to pull half the engine out just to get to something!
If its cheap and you need a car, i suggest buying it. Make sure you check for rust, and an knocking sounds while driving, especially turning.
Look where the car normally parks at her house and see if you can see oil on the ground. Thats a bad thing.
Good luck chick!

I would say with those amounts of kms and the year of the car that it has gone round the clock and started again. some cars just keep going and going. sometimes its not the engine you have to worry about but the body around it - rust etc.....
I had a Toyota starlet 1986- its engine would of kept going and going but the body was bit by bit the body was falling apart around it LOL - but I loved it - it was my first car

I agree with Bizzy that buying a car from a friend can get tricky... but that said I sold my first car (Toyota Corolla hatchbach) to a friend and it all went really well It was a FAB first car. The only reason I sold it was because DH refused to have it as our family car because it was too 'girly' for his liking, and we'd have struggled to fit the giant stroller and portacot in the back - also we wanted a massive boot in our new car so we could install an LPG tank. The corolla served me well, and did an unbelievable amount of mileage. Never gave my friend trouble either - she only sold it because her DH had the same attitude!
