Topic: Working for families payout Posted: 23 May 2006 at 11:01am |
Hope you don't mind Leish, but this jogged my ever decreasing memory and I thought there must be someone on here that is applying for it.
Copy of Leish's post on "baby payout":
Does anyone know - and I have looked at the website but am still not sure - much about the working for families thing? When we do get pregnant and after baby comes and I stop working, our income and having two children will mean that we will qualify for some assistance in the working for families package. But, do they assess your income from the previous tax year to determine your eligibility or will they go on what you are on at the time?

Yes we have applied for it the threashold with 2 kids is amazingly high. I think you can earn eighty something grand. Its worked out on your current wage. And you can get paid fortnightly, weekly or yearly.
We have opted to be paid yearly. Just for the pure fact that my DH sometimes gets paid a bonus etc and if we got paid weekly we would have to pay some back. So just works out better for us if they work out total income at end of financial year and then how much they owe us. Such a bonus. I think i worked it out that we would get about $30 a week. YAY.

You can apply on the IRD website (www.ird.govt.nz) or through www.workingforfamilies.govt.nz
You predict what your income for the year will be and they calculate your entitlement - try to be pretty close or you can end up with an overpayment bill at the end of the year.
Check out with Work and Income to see if you also qualify for any Accomodation Supplements - more information on the working for families website for that - we don't - but best wishes and fingers crossed for you

oooo, $30 x 52 weeks!! That will be a nice lump sum at the end of the year. We get some as well, not sure exactly how much, but will get it yearly as well to avoid having to pay any back

So do you base it on your income once you are on paid parental leave?

Thanks for bumping that Toni - and thanks everyone for your responses. I think we would get it paid fortnightly - we don't have any changes in income from pay to pay (no bonuses) and we will definately be needing that extra to get us through the time that I won't be working at all. Thats a relief that they assess it on your actual income rather than that of the previous year - we would get a whole lot of JACK if they did that!!

how come you get nothing Jax? My DH will be self employed so I am picking that the annual payment is probably going to be best for us! (when I eventually fall pregnant that is)

*snort* Don't know if I'd say lucky, but on the other hand, I really shouldn't complain ! I guess I get a little annoyed about it only because I know DH worries a lot about money and the extra pressure we will be under once bubs comes along - and it would be nice if there was even a *little* extra just to help us out with our girl. Oh well ! I have a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, and food in the fridge... not to mention a darling husband, so I'll shut up now

If the next baby was going to be the first for the two of us, we wouldn't qualify for any assistance on hubby's income with one child. And I don't think he earns THAT much...

Just checked all of our finances on the IRD calculator and it says that we are entitled to $5 a week. I'll try not to spend it all at once
On a serious note, I think we'll actually leave that $5 in the govt bank for people who really need it. Like you Roksana we get paid well (I suppose lol) but we also have a huge mortgage. Ahh well, makes you realise there's always someone out there worse off than you.

Just wanted to add something....if you have baby partway through the financial year (1st of April-31st of May) then don't forget to take account of the money you have already earnt when you do your estimate of your income for Working for Families. Say you have Bubs in June & you have earnt about $8k in that time then you get Paid Maternity leave, you need to include that in your estimate so the IRD don't overpay you & then give you a bill the following year.
That happened to a friend of mine & it made a mess of her finances.
