Topic: Have you let yourself go? Posted: 06 February 2010 at 11:28pm |
One comment I read in another thread tonight amused me. This is out of context and I do understand the gist of the comment (afterall some aspects of motherhood are less than glamourous but) the poster suggested that motherhood is unsuited to those that want to maintain a healthy figure (or in her words are 'vain') and I'm curious, do you think you've let yourself go and is motherhood a good excuse for this?
Me? I'm a vain mum. I feel good when I look good. My aim is to be a VRM (my husband seems to think I am ). I have some weight to shift but I take care of my appearance. I like to wear makeup and do my hair nicely everyday even when I don't intend to leave the house. I often wear skirts and dresses and most days I pop on a cute pair of stilletos when I take the kids out (and if we're walking wherever we're going I put my heels in the pram to change into).
Frumpy mum is not a good look on me so even when I'm sleep deprived, harrassed and up to my elbows in number 3's I choose to be a glam mum.

I think being a mother I have let myself go, I guess I have relaxed a little with my appearance and am comfortable enough to not have to dress up or wear makeup where ever I go. I think I have just become lazy (and too cheap to wast the makeup for just around home
I haven't let myself go so much that I cant get dressed up and do my makeup if I need to. I guess I am pretty lucky not having to worry too much about extra weight.
My biggest problem is the clothes I wear, I just don't have time to keep updating my wardrobe. I find it so frustrating trying to find clothes my size I just give up and wear my old jeans almost every day.
I really wish I could be a glam mum - you are my inspiration
What is a VRM????

I think, in the context it was used, that it was more to describe someone who cared more about their own body image than that of their unborn baby...more worried about staying slim, than being healthy.
Have I let myself go? Hrmm, probably yes. I'm nearly 20kg over my pre-preg weight, I have an "apron" and I don't put on makeup everyday, nor do I really dress up - singlet and a skirt, or shorts, is my lot unless I'm going to town or work, when I might put a bit of makeup on...and I live in my jandals (granted, they're flashy jandals, but still, at the end of the day, they're jandals!!).
So...I'm presentable, but worn in. I have other things to do with my day that take priority over how I look, what with study, work, and caring for our two girls.
And....cos I gotta ask....what is a VRM???
ETA: Oh, and my wardrobe is pretty restricted, so I don't get much to choose from...am on a weight loss challenge, so no point going out and buying a whole lot of clothes that hopefully won't fit soon!!

VRM = Very Rootable Mother
Daizy, I stopped trying to be 'fashionable' in my early 20s. I regularly wear clothes that I bought 8+ years ago, it's all about buying key pieces that suit you, are good quality and stylish enough that they won't go out of fashion (and trying not to gain or lose too much weight). Oooo, maybe we should go shopping!

I used to be a trendy person, make up, styley clothes black knee high boots etc etc, but since having the kids I dont wear make up, I live in shorts and singlets etc and in winter trackpants or leggings with ug boots, I either wear my hair in a pony tail or just brush it and clip my fringe put of the way lol
I havent worn make up for ages!
However, I am never "scruffy" I am always neat and tidy, and like Jo when i look good i feel good. So if Im wearing trackpants, I'll wear firm fitting ones, not baggy ones and a nice top etc etc
I always wear my nice silver necklaces and braclets and earings etc aswell.

This is interesting...even though I lost weight after my first baby, I didn't give a sh*t what I looked like. Supermarket at night in trackies & ugg boots! Then I watched a program about how NZ woman have let themselves go once they've got married & started having kids.
So I decided then and there to never go out in trackies & ugg boots again. Getting changed into something nicer definitely made me feel better....definitely helped with my self image. Definitely helped our home situation as DH was going through depression as well.
This time around my friends have described me as a MILF....I make sure I dye my greys, tie my hair back or straighten it & I am usually wearing something nice. Doesn't have to be expensive, can be hand me downs too, but it has to be something that makes you feel better so not a baggy t-shirt! I also have thin Lizzy which I keep in the car & whip around my face as I leave the drive. That alone makes me feel invincible!

lol Jo
I like to still be a MILF or VRM I dont wear makeup on a daily basis but do if there is a big event or we go out for something other than shopping or daily chores.
At home I tend to stick with shorts or skirt and singlet just cos its comfier than wearing other clothes in this terrible heat. I always put in the effort when I go out and make sure we all look presentable. I like to take pride in how I/we look.

See I am not old enough to have clothes I brought years ago, 8 years ago I was in fluffy pink skirts and boob tubes.
ETA. The other day I went to kindy in a nice skirt and top, and got so many comments, its amazing how much that can boost your whole day I just had to find somewhere else to go out to make the most of being dressed.

I haven't let myself go simply for the reason that I never 'was' to begin with.
I've always been a bit of a low maintenance type or tom-boy really. I like to make sure I'm clean and tidy when I go out but rarely wear makeup unless it's to work or 'out'. My wardrobe consists of tshirts, jeans, shorts and canterbury pants.
I'm lucky however that I have reasonably good skin (most of the time) and not much in the way of age-signs (crows feet and the like) so my face still looks presentable. I think this is because I didn't really start wearing makeup until I was about 28 and the moisturiser I use is a medicated one prescribed by my GP for eczema.
I HATE HATE HATE it though when my eyebrows get away on me.
And I weigh less now than I did when DH and I started TTC.
BUT in saying all this, one of the things I want this year is to be more groomed. I'll be getting regular haircuts, my brows will never get the better of me and (once I start back at work $$$) I will look more presentable (read MILF-like) both at home and when I go out.

I too am not a make up girl, the only time I wear it is on stage and on rare occassions I will put it on to go out at night, but even then Im quite comfortable to go out with a clean face.
I'm also probably alot like MrsH I dont dress like a girley girl as a rule, so my wardrobe basically consists of gym gear and surf brand clothing (roxy or ripcurl jeans, shorts and tops).
I'm in the process of losing the weight I put on during both pregnancies and Im getting there slowly, so at times I can look frumpy because I refuse to buy new clothes since I have a closet full of them already (they just dont fit yet)

I was 'healthy anal' about weight gain and exercise during my first pregnancy because I was still working. When you are at a gym every day its easy to find the motivation to use it! But its been a little harder this time, still concious of it though.
I'm not a make - up girl, too clueless and unco to use the blimmin' stuff. I would for a wedding, fancy dinner etc. it helps that I'm blesses with a smoothish olivey complexion. As for clothes, I'm a riding country bumpkin lol, bring on the jeans and check shirts.
If I'm having a bad day, I'll make the effort to make myself feel better, and if I am heading down the main road I'll make an effort too. I will see at least 5 people I 'know', even if it is just the shop keepers. Generally there will be an inlaw, a GP, a neighbour and a parent from kindy lol. I still want to put my best foot forward, even if I'm not all 'glammed up.'

I'm not a Mum quite yet, but I think I'm with the crowd that never 'was' to begin with I wear makeup on special occasions only (going to work doesn't count), although I do go through the odd phase of buying some and wearing it for a while.
I dress nicely for work because it's expected, but I don't give my clothes much thought. I've got some comfortable skirts / tops that I think look quite nice, and I throw on whatever first comes to hand in the mornning (provided it's not a pink skirt and a red top or some glaring thing like that). But if I'm at home on a Saturday in trackies and want come milk, I don't get changed to go get it.
I hardly ever wear heels - I have two pairs, one that I quite like for the odd special occasion, and a pair of stillettos that my sister wants me to wear to her wedding, and that I'm busy getting used to walking in!
Figure-wise, I used to care a lot in my late teens / early 20's (too much, I didn't find it fun at all). Then I got married - and I didn't let myself go (I've put on a few kilos on my teenage weight, but nothing that bothers me in the slightest), but I did stop caring. For me, that was a good thing, DH finds it much nicer too! Having tyroid issues that really bought my weight down for a while probably gave me a bit of a wake-up call that being super-slim isn't all that. I try and eat heathily, and if I think I'm plumping up a bit, I try and eat a little more healthily for a while, and it seems to do the trick!
DH doesn't seem to have any trouble finding me attractive, and I'm happy, which I kind of figures is what matters And when we do have Bubs, I won't have far to fall
ETA that the one thing I do do is try to get some excercise in. I figure it's healthy, and makes me feel better, it's pretty important. I'm not really into gyms, so I usually go walking (running in my more energetic times!) or swimming.

I dont think Ive really let myself go, but I do have a much more limited wardrobe and dress more casually than I did pre-kids. I think that has more to do with where we now live tho. You would never see a Mum out wearing stilletos around here!!
I cant stand having hairy eyebrows and get the waxed every 3 weeks. I have my hair regularly cut and dyed and wear basic makeup everyday even at home. I would like to wear more fashionable clothes tho and plan to get some new stuff for winter.

Yeah I'm a bit in the middle. When I first moved in with DP I always dressed nice, wore makeup all the time....but yes I did let myself go after that. Now I'm in the process of losing weight too...so my wardrobe consists of gym gear as well....I do have some nice pieces of clothing that I can still wear as I down size....but like mentioned earlier I don't want to spend money on clothes that I won't be needing anymore. At the moment as clothes get too big for me I chuck them out and buy something new (that's stretchable lol). I hardly ever leave home without eye liner and mascara and lipgloss lol. Will be getting some thin lizzy soon...and will be starting back at studies so will definitely be keeping my appearance up abit more than I am at the mo.

Ooh, I did think of another thng while making the scones. The one part of my life that fits a more primped and preened girly image than the rest of me is my knickers draw I do like nice knickers and bras, and sadly, all the bras are becoming too small at a rate of knots!
