Hey Deb, my friend had one to reduce pain and stop pregnancy for her endo. She never complains about it at all. It is like a metal T that is inserted into your womb and it stops the absorbtion of pregnancy. It also releases small amounts of progesterone as well (to stop pregnancy). She has hers in for 5 years then it is removed/changed. I don't know if it changes from person to person for how long you keep them in but I understand it is a long term thing.
All the best!

the one with proestrogen in it is called a Merina and is more expensive than an IUD. I think the merina is around$300, but if you consider how much you sepnd on the pill it can work out depending on which pill you are on.
My SIL had it and said it was never a problem, she sometimes got pain when it would fall against the back wall of her uterus but that was it. It also makes periods lighter due to the proestrogen.
The standard IUD is drug free

I am having a mirena put in after I have this child. Mine is more for the problems I have had with endo. To qualify for the mirena at no charge your iron levels need to be very low. Cost is about $300 and then you may be charged an fee to have it put in. Not all dr's can put it in, I know in Palmy only gyno's can put it in. It lasts 5 years (and from memory you want more children soon so may not be an option for you just yet if you have to pay the full price for it) but can be taken out at any stage. Goggle Mirena with a NZ search and it'll come up. There is one website that has a list of people all over NZ that can get it and put it in you.

Hi Deb,
As you know I had the Mirena put in a week ago.
I did it through family planning as they were the cheapest option here and all up it cost $455. (thats including the preliminary swabs they have to do)
It lasts for 5-7 years though and I worked out the costs of pill plus period supplies for that time and Mirena is about half the cost of that!
It was only painful for me for a couple of days afterwards. Just mild period like cramps.
The actual insertion was uncomfortable like a smear with a couple of stingy moments as they put it in place.
I had minimal bleeding afterwards for a day, and a week later have just got a light period. (no cramps or anything with it!)
The initial side effects you can get are similar to those you would get with the minipill (same hormone) and usually only last for the first 3 months.
I'm really happy with my decision, as I don't plan to have more children in the next 5 years.
Hope this helps!

I'm seriously thinking about getting the Mirena put in when I am in Oz at Christmas. It's way cheaper over there, and probably the only method of contraception that is going to be reliable for us given that Willie has a real aversion to condoms, and I don't have the greatest track history with the Pill (hmmmm, that's how we got Maya ) other than abstinence, and that worked for us for a while but has got a bit old.

i had a normal IUD put in, not a mirena.
i had a bit of cramping for a little while after and a bit of bleeding but it was just like a light period pain, not too bad at all.

my midwife recommended the mirena to me when she was discussing options, as opposed to hubby getting the chop. i looked into it a bit, but decided against it so for now its just icky condoms.

The normal IUD is a plastic T shaped thing with a copper coil around the vertical bit. That repels the spermy things from getting past it.
One of my friends has the IUD and she said apart from a bit of discomfort and pain when it was being put in, she has no problems at all! Raves about it.
I do know that Toni (the Matamata version) has had problems with the IUD. If she is on here maybe she'll elaborate or I can go back and find the post...?

Yep... the govt subsidises it, so I think it's around $25 (but don't quote me on that!) - definitely not a large amount anyway.

I got the normal IUD in and it didn't hurt and was the cost of a dr visit - problems started after that I ended up in hospital because of it and had a bad reaction to it even though it was in right place and no hassles getting it in. I have been told by my dr and the hospital Never to have one again as my body rejects it for some reason. I guess my option (not that I am thinking of having sex for a very long time LOL) is the pill or dep o (which I haven't been on that so might give it a go some time) I did think about telling the DR when he did the ceasar to tie my tube (I only have one) while he was in there but dunno if I am ready for that yet, I mean Rhyley is my last but.... I dunno thats so final.

Ack ! Depo is the devil *ahem* Sorry, I know it works well for some, but I wouln't ever touch it again with a ten foot pole. It made me put on a lot of weight, and after I stopped getting the shots, it took over a year for my period to come back and then it was all out of whack. I'm personally against an IUD (the normal one), and not sure about the Mirena (cost / chemical wise), and DH doesn't like condoms, so we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. (No pun intended !!!!!!!!!)
