Daniel is driving me nuts over the past 3 days...

I don't know if it's a growth spurt or what, he's never been this bad during his other growth spurts..

He feeds, yawns like crazy so I try and put him down, he screams blue murder, I go in and try and comfort him. Tried the dummy, it gets spat out. Eventually he sleeps for maybe 15mins then screams again.

He will sleep fine on me but as soon as he's moved he screams like crazy.

Then an hour after his last feed he wants more and off goes the cycle.

I've tried everything I can think of, he doesn't sleep in the pram or the car. And now of course he's overtired and getting more and more overtired the longer this goes on because he doesn't actually get any decent sleep.

Any suggestions at all?? Please

The first thing that has crossed my mind is reflux - although not having had any personal experience I don't know if they can diagnose it in babies this early, but I'm sure one of the other ladies here will know.

Does it happen at a certain time of day?
Do you swaddle him at all?
Do you make sure he burps after a feed or burp him mid-feed?
Does he respond to soothing music at all?

That's about all I can think of for now - good luck !!

This is happening all day for the past 3 days. Other than these 3 days though the only time he's quite unsettled is after his 4am feed and thinks its daytime.

Do you swaddle him at all?
He's always swaddled for his sleeps otherwise he smacks his face lots and wakes himself up more

Do you make sure he burps after a feed or burp him mid-feed?
I always try and burp him but it rarely ever gets anything out. He farts it out

Does he respond to soothing music at all?
No unfortunately

Ok so maybe get him checked out for reflux, if only to rule it out?

I was told that for the 12 week growth spurt to expect 2 weeks of unsettled behaviour. thank god Jack didn't even have one but if he doesn't start sleeping I would take to the dr.

Jack had reflux and I just remember he started of sleeping really well and then got worse and worse to a point where I remember trying to sleep on the couch and rock the bouncer at the same time. He never spewed or had low weight gain either. Once he was started on the medicine his sleeps slowly got longer and he started spilling a lot.

Good luck I'm really hoping this is just a random long growth spurt cos reflux really sucks.

Poor You! That is not fun. Hang in there. I remember Oliver was tricky to get to sleep at around a month to eight weeks. It did get better though.
I don't know anything about reflux but I guess it would be worth checking if things don't improve.
Here's hoping for a better day for you tomorrow.

Briona had silent reflux so actually was mostly ok in the mornings but really unsettled later in the day as she fed more often. So I'm not convincedf it's reflux.

Take him down to the Albert St (top end) Plunket they can help you, and let you see or borrow a couple of "sleep videos" - helped me, anyway.

Hey My names Sam and my son Tristan Joel is nearly nine months old now. When Tristan was around 1 month to 3 months i had similar problems where he wouldnt sleep anywhere except in my arms. We thought he had colic and then we thought  he had reflux but niether of them were diagnosed. Eventually we just got through it and now he is amazing....weve definatly never looked back! Some things that definatly helped ME through those hard times ws putting on some lovely music (we used Celine Dion " Miracles" ) turned it up loud enough so the crying wasnt as ear piercing (which for my son was really loud) but not too loud so that the music hurt our ears and just walked around the room lost in my own thoughts. It definatly made a difference in my mood which nearly always had an effect on Tristan! I also used to take him into the bathroom and turn on the shower full boar. Tristan loved the sound of water and it at least stopped the crying long enough for me to collect myself! Sometimes he would even fall asleep during these things! So for me they really worked! I know how you feel and wish you the best of luck! Remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Kate has wound herself up into a state a few times and one thing that has always helped is a shower. She just relaxes and calms down and has dropped off everytime straight afterwards. Not sure if it will work for Daniel but I'm sure after 3 days you'll be willing to try anything!

and of course my mum would say you need to build up your milk if it is a growth spurt!!!

My milk has nothing wrong with it at the moment lol.. I've expressed off 80ml after he had a long feed this morning. I've got more than enough milk for him!

Bath works great while he's in it. As soon as he gets out he screams like crazy and works himself up when we are dressing him. He still really hates being changed.

Going to the GP this morning anyway for me and for him so will see what he says. He slept in bed with me last night and DH slept on the couch so he could get some much needed sleep for work.

Is he getting tired/hungry when in the bath and that's why he doesn't enjoy all the fuss afterwards? Perhaps the bathtime is too long for him or could be rescheduled?

He's got silent reflux Poor lil man!

With bath time he's completely fine up until he is getting dressed and it's not cause he's tired or hungry or anything like that. It's simply him hating being dressed/undressed.

Have they given you any meds for him, Stacey?  Hope they help, and soon.  Reflux really sux, as lots of us can tell you from experience (you're not alone, chickie!  I feel for you - makes the whole 'newborn haze' that bit more, well, hazier, doesn't it!).  I hope he soon grows out of it.  Big hugs to you, girl.

We have been given gaviscon to try and see if that helps him. I'm to try it for a few days and if that doesn't work then we are to try something else. So far though it has made a difference. Daniel has now on his 3rd sleep for the afternoon/evening which is a vast improvement over the past few days. I'm not gonna even bother giving him a bath tonight because he needs to catch up on his sleep. Poor wee man!

Hey Stacey,
You'll be glad that you have found the problem! Not so glad its reflux, Elle has the same thing and I am finding the Gaviscon helps heaps. She was also the same after a bath, and then I was given a mirror on the stand (you know one of those make-up mirrors, that magnify on one side and other is normal), I pop it down beside her and aim it at her so she can see herself and this often distracts her, along with my singing silly songs to her. She is much better now, still dislikes it but is better. Maybe try something like this for Daniel????? - Worth a shot!
