yay for getting a furkid kandice!   i totally second the breeder option.....stay well clear of any petshops....clyde was $700 from a registered breeder and goldies sell in petshops for over $1000

tibetian spaniels are gorgeous also! my nana and grandad have one and she just loves the kids, especially charli

In regards to food - I feed mine Beneful by Purina One. Its a really good all round food and they do puppy food too! I've never fed them wet food - it gives them the runs. Mine didnt like the fancy vet foods. It costs me $39 a month to feed 2 (we get the big sacks from the supermarket)

What about a poodle? Easy to train and their fur is like wool so not so much doggy smell and not as allergenic.

Last time i went to Hells Pizza, there was a man there with a dog called a Japanese spitz, it was identical to the one in the photo and that was about as big as it grew.
They are quite expensive tho, but he was so placid, didnt mind Caitlyn patting him at all.
We had a tibetan spaniel, she was lovely but quite hyper,my gran had a spoodle (half spaniel half poodle ) one of the loveliest dogs ive ever met.

This is the Japanese Spitz, how cute is that??

My uncle had one of those and they are great and so soft. We used to play with it all the time as kids and it was like a big teddy bear.

Oh I knew someone with a Jap Spitz. Its name was Sushi!
Was a very placid and friendly dog. I love Tibetan spaniels too. Man, I wish I had room for more dogs.....I love them so much.

I have a champagne chihuahua and my advice would be that if you are getting a small do then to think about it like you would if you were having another baby. Little dogs need lots of love and affection and are basically toddlers for life. They wreck and wreck and love and love and then instead of having dirty clothes that they drop every where they have DOG HAIR which is 10x worse! (although that isn't such a problem with wool breeds).
On the upside though, they are loyal and wonderful conversation. Also you don't need to exercise them for as long as a big dog and they eat minimal food. As for breeds, each breed has a character flaw... chihuahuas are synonomus for being barky yappy snippy things with terrible hip troubles and weight problems. A lot of little dogs have eye and joint problems and it is $$$$$ on top of what ever registration you pay AND yearly shots.

Think long and hard about it, it can be the best decision you can ever make, an investment and companion

Oh thats what I meant to say - Bichons are the same, they dont drop any fur and its like wool but it's hypoallergenic. I'm allergic to EVERYTHING - except my doggies :D

you could always go along to a dog show one day when the toy dogs are on and have a look.....there's HEAPS of different breeds. then you'd also get the chance to talk to some breeders

One of my friends are getting a Bichon and are going to letit have a litter and said we could have one of the pups as long as we pay the vet bills for it till we get it. It won't be for another year. I am tempted cause since we had our little visitor Rocky the bichon till it went back to its owner I thought it would be cool and got on so well with our Boxer (whom is like another human child so all use to that)

I do get anonyed at people 'breeding' designer dogs - when in fact they are mutts (sorry not meaning to ofend but most of them charge the earth for one)

Bichons do not malt nor have dog smell and our visitor didn;t bark once in the day and night we had it. Even when it slept locked in our laundry.

we have a foxy x chihuahua and while its still a little 2 young to tell its temperament, its so much fun so far, I am yet to hear her bark and has the same amount of energy as Jack.

FIL has bichons and OMG I have never heard a dog bark so much in my life, they also aren't toilet trained but then that could well be the owners not the dogs.

Rach, little dogs can be much harder to toilet train. Took me a year but now she is great

Never had a problem with mine. Its all about taking them to the loo as soon as they eat and as soon as they wake up. The barking thing can also be trained out - mine bark when theres something to bark at - plus they're BRILLIANT with the cat.

I have a Jack and she is FAR FAR FAR from yappy, and is a super awesome kid dig. We breed her, she is fantastic. Highly reccomend. Need lots of walks though as they have lots of energy and are full on for about 2 years, but the loyalest dogs ever.

Foxys are similar, but skinnier to look at (not as broad on the chest or nose and skinier legs, a bit taller, too) AND they are a bit yappy...

ooh just a wee aside. If you are going to buy from a breeder, they will probably require you to promise to feed your dog premium dog food. Actually, the premiums work out cheaper in the long run as you use less food, plus their poos are smaller and harder and less stinky to clean off the lawn!! (that is a big plus, trust me!)
Also, many require you to neuter them, and lots like to check your property before you can have the dog (we do) to make sure it is dog friendly and safe.
Also, many like to know if you are in a long term lease or own your own home as it is hard and heartbreaking to rehome dogs that cannot move with their owners because new home own't allow dogs. My brother had to give away his $1000 plus siberian husky cos he couldn't find a place that would let him have the dog.

Good luck! Getting a dog is the bomb and they are a great addition to any family!

yeah FTR we have two pedigree dogs and i spend about $30-$50 per week on their food, not to mention set up costs for leads and bowls and dog kennel, blankets / pillow (yes it gets cold and they are not inside dogs due to fur issues they dump!)and have cost me a bomb.

Then any good dog owner should do at least one term of puppy training...we did eight years of obedience and agility!

vet costs...well we dont go often but when we do i dont get change from about $60-$200 per dog. Worming tablets, registration fees etc etc...it all adds up...basically to own a dog you should budget an extra $1500-$3000 per annum depending on what kind of dog you get. and yes a fully fenced section is needed and walks daily for them too....

I love my fur bubbas....but they can be an expensive and long lesson if you choose the wrong one - they will live about ten years on average. BTW i was a registered breeder (did one litter and OMG talk about outta pocket!) and it is the puppies left over or with something wrong with them (eg some not pure breds) that go to pet shops...altho NZKC dont want to know they end up there....go to a breeder and negotiate for ones that might not be PERFECT...

Thanks BS for your imput.
We have found a NZKC breeder of bichon frise, but i would like to see Kylah around one first. We would buy the bowls and leads etc before we get the pup.

They do want to come check out our property first, im staying with mum at the moment as we are saving for a deposit for our own home so will be here untill then.

Our house is HUGE and fully fenced back yard.
