My best gift was Penelope Leachs 'Baby and Child' it was my bible for that first year and I still refer to it regularly.

I always try and buy something they wouldn't normally buy for themselves, boutiquey stuff like Dimples booties, Mokopuna stuff, Nature Baby stuff etc. I mean, most people wouldn't spend $30 on a baby hat or $45 on an outfit for themselves, but it's nice to be given stuff like that.
