My obstetrician didn't mention not drinking (that I can remember) but he was fairly hands off about things like that, the extent of his "what not to eat" speech was stay away from raw things like eggs and meat!
I craved beer something chronic and had a couple of shandies during my pregnancy. I restricted it to when we went to my favourite german bar for a big meal and sitting in the sun. I went off wine completely (the smell and the taste) so although I held onto a glass of champagne at my baby shower I had maybe one sip and then switched to water.
I've had friends in NZ who've been told by their doctor that a glass of wine each week or so is perfectly OK too.

Hmm this is getting really interesting it seems that we aren't all getting the same info. I am sure most of our mums may have had the odd sip and we all turned out ok.Keep the comments comming though i am sure others will be interested to read this and add their comments.

My MW told me it was ok to have a very occasional small glass with a full meal. She said they generally say absolutely none as otherwise people drink a glass the size of a bucket.
Mind you I was panicking as I had just drunk a glass of bubbly grape juice the night before that turned out to be alcoholic (friend bought it and didn't read the label properly) so maybe she was trying to make me feel better
ETA: My mum told me that she drank throughout her pregnancy with me but 'never so much that I threw up'. Gee thanks mum
ETAA: And no, I don't agree with my Mum on this one.

Bobbie I've heard that comment too - my friend's specialist told her that saying have nothing at all is to discourage the people who would drink far too much if they said "a little bit is OK" - because a little bit is different for everyone, right?

Yes, I've heard this too and I completely agree with the theory behind it. I read somewhere that the women that did have the occasional glass of wine were usually well educated career women to whom wine was a usual part of their lives. Wonder why???
For me, I freaked out my entire pregnancy, but have to admit to having a couple of glasses of wine mixed with soda water in the later weeks of pregnancy. What I read was that the damage is more likely to be done in weeks 5-10 of pregnancy.
I also had a massive craving for the smell of bourbon. My ex drinks bourbon and I would insist on pouring his glass so I could stand there and sniff it Weird huh!
ETA: the couple of glasses were not in the same sitting!! I think it was like three glasses in total over about six or seven weeks.

I was told to abstain but there is controversial evidence on this. This year a study was published in the UK suggesting a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy is associated with better development in children:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/3285792/Pregnant-women-can-drink-a-small-glass-of-wine-a-week.html
I had a few small shandys in Samoa when we got married. I think the next pregnancy I may have a small drink once a week after the first trimester. This is not the only study - there was a very large Australian study showing no increase in birth defects in women who drank 2-14 drinks a week (I don't suggest this!!) The thing about FAS is the facial defects occur at a very specific time - and fairly randomly ie - some women its a couple of drinks, some alcoholics have normal babies.

Hi all - I asked my OB about wine, as 5 days prior to xmas my dad passed away and I thought the odd glass of wine my calm my nerves whilst organising the funeral and stuff with mum. She said 1 glass of 120mls (a standard drink) every now and then after 16 weeks was fine. But only with a large meal. So I did have some wine over the week leading up to the funeral and I just made just my glass was never too big. I just made sure I stuck to the 120mls rule. Because when you see how much 120mls is - you realise that most of the wines poured at BBQs etc .. and about 2.5 standard drinks!
Mind you I've known other mums who've had bucket loads of wine, and they have been told thats ok too. Some have even tried to convince me to drink when we are at BBQs and stuff, and I have to be very firm with the 'no thanks'. It gets a bit annoying.

I'm sorry but I'd never risk it, regardless of whether some of you claim a small amount is safe or not- is it really worth it in the long run? I've seen the effects of FAS - it ain't pretty!, and that was from a woman who only drank a couple glasses during her pregnancy because she was told it was OK to do so.
With anything though, you'll always get conflicting information depending on the MW or Doctor. That was one thing I couldn't stand with my post-natal care. I was getting told totally diff advice from the likes of MW, Plunket, Dr etc etc.
I personally think the msg is loud and clear, and it's a selfish act to indulge in an alcoholic beverage when pregnant, but please bare in mind I'm a non-drinker and non-smoker- I can't stand the thought of either (fun police or what? ) Personal life choice and I'm happy with it, I don't need it
But on a side note, think of all these women who fall pregnant unplanned and often go out on weekends boozing it up (especially during that first trimester when they have no idea they are preggers, when its crucial), and they end up going on to keep bub - would be interesting to see the % of bubs that suffer the effects of FAS later on, if they were to conduct a study iykwim.

My midwife said pretty much that personally she would advise me to abstain but that if I were to drink then it must only be a little, occasionally.
I didn't drink- totally not worth the risk IMO.
I've got a 'friend' who drank during her pregnancies and she always spouts on about how she drank and her kids are 'fine'. Her kids are little snots and both are considerably behind developmentally in all areas- it could be a coincidence but I think her and hers as a walking advertisement NOT to risk drinking while pregnant

ROFL Jen that made me spit out my tea
I wouldn't risk it either personally - I was freaking out majorly from the one glass I did have and drank about 2 bottles of water afterwards to dilute it. Rowan's fine but it's just not worth the worry about 'what if' IMHO.

Was pregnant both times in Japan and got such conflicting advice from my OB there and my midwife here. Midwife sent me infor about "no go" foods, my OB snorted and said that in Japan, sushi was fine because it was so fresh. Also, that alcohol wasn't too bad. My midwife told me that while some people drink in pregnancy and there babies are fine, no one knows the "safe" level and for some people, one drink could cause FAS, so she recommend not drinking at all. I felt she was really good - not really saying "don't do it" but said, "these are the facts, this is what I think, make your own mind up" - and for me, reasonably educated, I appreciated that - and No, I didn't drink. However, with Taine I didn't know I was pregnant and had a few pina coladas in Phuket

I personally wouldn't risk it , but thats just my personal choice.
When I was pregnant with C I was out drinking and partying for the first 7 weeks til I found out, she walked at 9 months, was speaking in 3 word sentences before she was one, so no FAS syndrome here.
My friend didn't find out she was pregnant til she was 7 MONTHS (yes I know) and smoked and drank all the way through, and HER girl is fine .
But then I have known girls who only drank a little and their babies have FAS , so perhaps its luck of the draw in some cases.
Its just one I don't mind giving up ( I found it much much harder to give up smoking )

A huge study has actually just been finished on all the different drugs and pregnancy and alcohol was the worst by far for the foetus, worse than P, worse than heroin. I wouldn't have the odd smoke of P while pregnant so I def wouldn't have the odd drink either.
To me when people say "oh my kid is fine" I always think yeah but imagine what your kid could of been. You can't gurantee you did no damage.

Well, in Caitlyn's case I can guarantee it , after 7 years something would have been noticed by now , however if something wasn't right, it wouldn't have been intentional , as I gave up smoking and drinking once I knew I was pregnant , so it wouldn't have been on my conciense as much .
My friend worked in NICU she said the babies of addicts were heartbreaking .
This is not meaning to offend anyone, and it is my personal opinion , I just feel , that if you make the decision to keep a baby , you are making the decision to give them a healthy start for 9 months. I know its not always easy for some tho , I gave up smoking but it sure wasn't easy

My midwife never really said anything about drinking ad preg but a friend was told one glass of wine a week was fine. Some cultures drink throughout their pregs and dont seem to have the FAS issues that are apparently around and ive also heard of someone being diagnosed with FAS even tho his mother swears she never drunk so who knows what to believe maybe they have linked the FAS symptoms to the wrong cause. There is always a study that "proves something" and in most cases another that contradicts it.
Did you hear that daily use of mouthwash gives you mouth cancer? At the rate the scientist are studying things we wont be able have do or what we enjoy or live where we want.

I've had three different OB's with my three pregnancies and all have said drinking a wine every so often was ok.....or that the research was inconclusive so left it to me. I've had a couple of sips of wine with this pregnancy but my taste buds must have changed because I didn't like it!! Hopefully that will change when babies comes.

My midwife said that there was currently no research to back that any amount of alcohol during pregnancy was safe, it was on my own back what I did but she recommended to keep to a minimum if I was a heavy or occasion drinker or not at all.

I don't drink either so it wasn't really an issue for me, and coz I had the same midwife all 4 times she didn't bother asking after Maya.
