Moltex Biodegradeable Disposable Nappies

Moltex Biodegradeable Disposable NappiesMoltex Biodegradeable Disposable Nappies

Rated Best Absorbency in the 2007 OHbaby! Golden Nappy Awards

Ecobaby Store says that Moltex Biodegradeable disposable nappies are better for the environment than other disposable nappies because they will break down and biodegrade in your compost heap in approximately 13 weeks. You flush solids down the toilet and put the nappies into the compost heap, using earthworm composting for more effective results. 50% of the materials used to make Moltex nappies are from renewable resources. The absorbent core is 100% chlorine-free, the nappy is free from perfumes and lotions and free from bleaching agents and toxic residues. Moltex nappies feature variable and re-closable grip tabs, a breathable outer layer, unbleached paper for extra softness, and minimal absorbency gels to prevent gel leaks on Baby’s skin. They are an excellent option for those using cloth nappies who need a disposable at night or when camping, travelling or going out and about.

OHbaby! mums tested two sizes in the Moltex Biodegradeable disposable nappy range: Midi (4-9kg) and Junior (11-25kg).

Moltex nappies look different to your “normal” nappy in one big way – their colour. While traditional disposable nappies are white because the materials used to make them have been bleached, Moltex nappies are made from unbleached paper and therefore look greyish-beige in colour. Once our mums got past the way the nappies looked, they were intrigued by the idea of a biodegradeable nappy, thinking that it is a great choice for the eco-conscious.

Moltex nappies scored very highly in the categories of absorbency, ease of use, dusabilirt, flexibility of materials, nighttime performance, handling of soiling, and closure tabs.

Our mums thought these nappies were well-cut to fit Baby’s shape and bottom, and found that the grip tabs were especially good, refastening several times with ease and never tearing off. One of our mums even thought the grip tabs on Moltex nappies were the best out of all the nappies trialled. We found these nappies to be super-absorbent and they were a good nighttime option, especially for babies with normally very wet bottoms. They are very easy to use and are similar to MCNs in their environmental impact, except that you don’t have to wash anything.

Moltex nappies are on the expensive side compared to the other brands we trialled (66c per nappy for the Midi size, 84c per nappy for the Junior size). However, considering the negative impact on the environment that traditional disposable nappies cause, the price is competitive – one mum likened buying these nappies to paying a bit more for organic food.

The size range of Moltex nappies was quite comprehensive, but the Junior size seemed to cover a huge range and our mums wondered how bigger babies would fit them, as 11 to 25kg is quite a range. Our mums weren’t terribly keen on the colour, as it showed up a bit strange under white clothing. Also, when these nappies were very wet, the centre felt a bit hard (one of the mums likened it to a lump of wet paper towels) – but this is because there is minimal gel in the core unlike traditional disposables.

Overall, our mums gave Moltex nappies a score of 7 out of 10.
