Read MoreSettling your baby into childcare can be hard, but BestStart educators have plans in place to foster trust, connection and care.
Walking into an early childhood centre for the first time with your baby can feel like a big leap. You’re handing your little one to new people in a new space. It’s completely okay if that stirs up big emotions, for both of you.
In those first visits, follow your baby’s pace. Most centres offer settling sessions, these are short, supported visits where you stay close while your baby gradually gets to know the people and the space.
When choosing a centre, look for teachers (kaiako) who want to get to know your baby and their routines, their preferences, how they like to be held, and what soothes them. These small things build trust, and trust is the foundation for learning.
When babies feel safe, they are open to exploring, playing and connecting. Experienced infant teachers will notice your baby’s cues, follow their interests and respond with warmth.
Care moments are also learning opportunities for babies, they’re not just about tasks to fulfil physical needs, but also responsive and reciprocal moments that teach them about relationships and their sense of self-worth.
Keep communication lines open during the transition. Share what’s happening at home as well as asking about your baby’s day. This connection helps create consistency and a sense of security for your child.
You can support your baby by bringing a comfort item from home. You can also use a familiar goodbye ritual, such as a kiss, cuddle or a simple phrase. These small rituals help babies know they’re safe, and that you’ll be back.
