DIY: Drawers with a bonus
More than just a bedside table, these drawers offer a play station and treasure storage all in one.
Parents love clever storage ideas and places where children can put away their own precious possessions are a must in any kid's bedroom. But drawers need not only be drawers – we added blackboard paint for labelling contents or just a casual doodle, and magnetic paint that invites a child to stop and play awhile.
You will need:
◼️ A small set of wooden drawers
◼️ Sandpaper and/or primer (optional)
◼️ Small paintbrush and rollers
◼️ Masking tape
◼️ Resene Magnetic Magic paint
◼️ Resene Blackboard Paint
◼️ Enamel paint in your choice of colours.
1. Clean the drawer unit to remove any dust. Sand and prime if necessary. We love Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer adhesion primer, which adheres to almost any surface and provides a paint-ready finish without the need for sandpaper.
2. Paint the unit’s top and any visible front sections in the colour of your choice. We used Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel in Resene White. Allow two hours to dry between coats. We applied three coats of white because the top of the unit and the bottom of each drawer (where there is a groove to pull the drawer out) will get some wear and tear.
3. Once the paint is dry, use masking tape to protect the edges of the freshly painted areas and apply two coats of Resene Magnetic Magic paint to each side of the unit.
4.While you're waiting for the magnetic paint to dry, paint the drawer fronts with Resene Blackboard Paint; again we used two coats.
5. Finally, apply your chosen contrasting colour of enamel paint on top of the magnetic paint. We used Resene Neutral Bay.
