New Shoots founder, co-owner, and director, Michelle Pratt explains how to make the daily transition into childcare as smooth as possible.
Create a consistent routine to bring a sense of predictability for your child. Consistency helps children feel secure and understand what to expect each day.
Build a connection with your teachers. Knowing and trusting the people who will be taking care of your child can ease anxiety for both of you.
Gradual separation if possible, is a good idea. Start with short periods of separation and gradually increase the time. At New Shoots Children's Centres, transition visits are essential to our settling-in process.
Create a goodbye ritual. This could be a special hug, a quick game, or a phrase you say before leaving. Consistency in your goodbye routine helps signal to your child that it's time for you to go and assures them that you'll return. Slipping away while they're not looking can be tempting, but children can become more anxious if you suddenly disappear and they can't find you.
Stay positive. Children can pick up on your emotions, so if you're anxious or upset they may feel the same way. Express excitement about the activities they'll be doing, there's always lots of fun things going on! Talk to your centre director or teacher – a collaborative approach between parents and teachers creates a supportive environment. Remember, teachers are qualified and trained to assist you. Most centres have a digital parent communication system so ask about these when enrolling your child.
Offer comfort objects like their favorite stuffed animal or blanket. Having a familiar item can provide a sense of security during the separation and settling process.
Follow up on your child's day during pickup. This shows your child that you are interested in their experiences and reinforces the idea that you will always come back for them.
